MESSAGE FROM the IACMR PRESIDENTOpportunity in Financial Crisis: Creating New KnowledgeShuming Zhao, School of Business, Nanjing UniversityThe impact of the U.S. financialcrisis has rippled across the globe,prompting concerns about the growthof emerging markets, the future fordeveloping countries, the need forenhanced regulation and a new globalfinancial architecture. The complexinterrelationships among economic events,technological developments, monetarypolicy, social events, corporate strategy,population trends and the regulatoryenvironment have created the conditionsfor a global crisis of significant magnitude.During these challenging and uncertaintimes, the contributions of managementand management research in business andorganizations are paramount.The academic world is not isolatedfrom the world of practice. As the world struggles with thenew realities of this unprecedented financial crisis, managementresearchers, students and practitioners must pay attention to therole that academic theories may play in the world developments.As we all know, the scientist’s goal is to seek understanding,explanation and prediction of a phenomenon so that theknowledge can be used in a positive way to advance, changeand influence future practices. Some people criticize that noexisting theories have forecast this unprecedented crisis, and evenworse, that it is the economic and financial research on financialderivatives that has led to the U.S. financial crisis.The ICAMR defines its responsibilities in the creation anddissemination of knowledge about management in the Chinesecontext to be a true reflection of the practical world and itsfindings to be useful in the development of business practices.In the continuing refinement of truth and usefulness, knowledgecreated by science is tested and retested, new theories are createdand new data are used to refute or confirm the initial theories.That is how knowledge is updated, through ongoing scientificresearch involving new theorizing and new observations. It has the registered capital of RMB 100 880 000,employs 15 000 people, and the total sales were more thanRMB 3 800 000 000 in 2006. The company has more than80 subsidiaries, 400 affiliated companies and 5 overseas'subsidiaries. CNYH specializes in manufacturing industry'electric apparatus, electrical transmission and transformationmachinery, automotive control series, farm machinery,mechanical installation, machine tools, steel structurebuilding and real estate development. The major productsof CNYH are more than 200 series and 6000 specifications,such as our low-voltage electric apparatus; machine toolelectric appliance control elements; complete high and lowvoltage electric equipment; electric devices and meters, powertransmission and distribution equipment, ten patents of whichbelong to CNHY.Since 2001, CNHY has been awarded as one of top500 private enterprises for many years by the All-ChinaFederation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC). The most critical oneis that these firms, established by shareholders of bloodrelationships, are now hindered by intertwined blood relationsin their expansion decisions.Private enterprises were initially funded by families,friends or relatives. It is undeniable that blood relationshipsallow shareholders to stick together in its early stage, andsuch contribution enabled survival in the start-up stage.However, as the firm grows, such relationships become thesource of discord, which influence the company’s decisionmakingwhen the company expands. Also, at the start-upstage, each shareholder is typically in charge of one area, andtheir expertise is normally confined to that area. Thus, theytend not to be generalists. As the firm expands, the managerneeds broader knowledge. Such a limitation resulting fromblood-relationship entrepreneurial activity becomes a bigobstacle to decision making.何 : 在 公 司 管 理 方 面 , 中 国 民 营 企 业 遇 到 的 问 题 相 同 。最 为 突 出 的 是 由 于 血 缘 型 关 系 所 组 成 的 公 司 在 公 司 发 展壮 大 后 严 重 影 响 公 司 的 决 策 。民 营 企 业 创 业 初 期 由 血 缘 型 股 份 组 成 , 股 东 投 资 者都 是 朋 友 或 者 亲 戚 。 不 可 否 认 , 创 业 初 期 , 股 东 间 的 血缘 关 系 使 得 股 东 间 具 有 很 强 的 凝 聚 力 , 对 初 期 的 发 展 贡献 很 大 。 但 是 , 随 着 企 业 规 模 的 扩 大 , 血 缘 型 的 股 东 关系 就 会 影 响 企 业 决 策 , 成 为 不 和 谐 因 素 。 创 业 时 期 , 由于 各 股 东 各 自 负 责 一 部 分 工 作 , 由 于 工 作 能 力 不 全 面 ,虽 然 在 公 司 创 业 初 期 是 专 家 , 但 不 是 “ 博 士 ”。 而 企 业在 重 大 的 决 策 过 程 中 需 要 “ 博 ”, 而 不 是 “ 专 ”。 这 样血 缘 关 系 成 为 公 司 决 策 非 常 大 的 障 碍 。Zhe: What do you think an organization like IACMR can dofor Chinese management?He: Chinese management issues are so unique that there areno standard formulas for them, and each case requires a newapproach. Management scholars tend to generate generaltheories, which may be appropriate for new firms. In practice,research implications are not finite.Chinese firms are characterized as taking a trial anderror approach. Chinese entrepreneurs are very keen on喆 : 您 认 为 像 IACMR 这 样 的 组 织 能 为 中 国 管 理 提 供 哪 些帮 助 ?何 : 中 国 管 理 问 题 很 特 殊 , 没 有 标 准 的 处 理 方 式 , 每 种管 理 情 况 下 都 应 该 有 新 的 处 理 方 式 。 而 管 理 学 者 的 研 究所 得 都 是 通 用 的 理 论 , 仅 适 用 于 刚 刚 创 立 的 企 业 ; 在 实践 工 作 中 , 研 究 的 指 导 作 用 并 不 是 完 全 的 。中 国 企 业 的 特 点 是 摸 着 石 头 过 河 , 中 国 企 业 家 爱 学习 。 建 议 研 究 机 构 不 要 把 国 外 的 东 西 照 搬 过 来 , 这 样 并6

learning. I suggest that research institutions do not simplytransplant ideas without adaptation, for they are not suitablefor Chinese firms. Chinese and foreign firms take differentpaths to grow. Chinese firms grow from the grassrootseconomy, different from that which foreign firms have gonethrough. Management studies should contextualize Chinesefirms. Chinese firms develop during the evolution of plannedeconomy. The first generation of entrepreneurs was growingup in the process of China transforming from a plannedeconomy to a market economy.I suggest that the research focus on the growing path andthe thinking pattern of the first generation of entrepreneurs.Take the Wenzhou mode as an example; it is impossible toimitate because it is the way Wenzhou’s people think thatcreates the Wenzhou economy and Wenzhou mode. Thethinking pattern becomes an idea. Ideas are conceptual,and thinking is dynamic. This type of thinking patternbecomes part of the culture. Moreover, combining Chinesemanagement thoughts with western experience could betterserve the Chinese economy, but we should know Chinesemanagement ideas first.Zhe: In your view, what are the implications of the currenteconomic crisis for Chinese firms in the future?不 适 合 中 国 企 业 的 管 理 实 践 。 中 国 企 业 的 成 长 道 路 与 国外 不 一 样 。 中 国 企 业 是 从 草 根 经 济 发 展 起 来 的 , 这 是 与国 外 企 业 成 长 经 历 最 突 出 的 差 别 。 研 究 应 该 以 中 国 企 业的 根 基 为 基 础 展 开 。 中 国 企 业 是 在 计 划 经 济 的 演 变 过 程中 发 展 起 来 的 。 第 一 代 企 业 家 从 计 划 经 济 向 市 场 经 济 转变 中 成 长 起 来 , 这 段 过 程 影 响 中 国 整 个 经 济 的 发 展 。建 议 研 究 以 第 一 代 企 业 家 的 成 长 历 程 、 思 路 为 对象 。 以 温 州 模 式 来 说 , 温 州 模 式 是 没 有 办 法 模 仿 的 , 它是 温 州 人 的 思 维 方 式 , 这 种 思 维 成 为 一 种 理 念 , 创 造 了温 州 的 经 济 , 形 成 了 温 州 模 式 。 理 是 概 念 化 的 , 而 念 是动 态 的 , 是 一 种 文 化 。其 二 , 与 西 方 的 经 验 结 合 起 来 , 这 样 能 够 更 好 地 服务 于 中 国 经 济 , 但 首 先 要 把 中 国 的 东 西 研 究 清 楚 。喆 : 您 认 为 当 前 的 经 济 危 机 会 给 中 国 企 业 带 来 哪 些 影响 ?He: The economic crisis has some impact on Chinese firmsfollowing the earlier macroeconomic regulation and control.Chinese exports are affected, but the effect will be reducedwhen the domestic demand is stimulated by policies and thefocus of foreign trade policy transforms from importing todomestic products.何 : 伴 随 前 期 中 国 的 宏 观 经 济 调 控 , 金 融 危 机 对 中 国 实体 经 济 造 成 一 些 影 响 。 中 国 企 业 的 出 口 受 到 了 一 定 的 影响 , 但 随 着 国 内 政 策 对 内 需 的 拉 动 , 以 及 外 贸 政 策 从 进口 转 向 国 内 产 品 , 将 降 低 对 出 口 的 不 利 影 响 。7

Reflection on PDW—Teaching ResearchMethodsSchool of Management, the National University of SingaporeHow to quickly improve research competencies ofmanagement graduate students? What method course shouldbe offered to systematically develop students to engage inempirical research? These are concerns of managementscholars that can not be easily addressed. The IACMR timelyprovided a faculty development workshop on how to teachresearch method in the last day of the biennial conference.The workshop was chaired by Professor Xiao-Ping Chen.Many experienced scholars, including Jia Lin Xie, ChristopherHsee, Kwok Liang, Yan Zhang, Jia-Der Luo, Minping Huang,and Anne Tsui, gave presentations on a variety of researchmethod topics. They were also authors of the newly publishedbook . The book was first of its kind in China that can beused as a textbook and gives hand-on guidance for conductingempirical research. After presentations, participants weredivided into groups to discuss some important topics. His topic was“Employer’s and Students’ perceptions of Job fit in China”and his main finding was that there were indeed some veryinteresting differences as to the perceptions of the studentsand employers on both skill inventories and also as to personalattributes. She reportedher research on the problem of employers’ experiences ofshortage of skilled workers in Suzhou Industrial Park. He elaborated onsome discrimination in recruiting basedon evidence from a study conducted atBeijing’s Urban Labor Market.After the presentation, Dr. Yanginvited the discussant, Professor ThomasLee, a renowned scholar from Universityof Washington, and the president ofAcademy of Managment to offer hiscomments. Professor Lee’s passion forresearch was felt throughout the wholehall. He commended them for their focuson Chinese management issues and theirresearch methods. Despite the abundantknowledge and expertise possessed by seasoned collegeadministrators, today’s higher education has been widelycriticized for being either inefficient or ineffective, or both. Ifwe agree that “nothing is more practical than a good theory,”the need for new research work that provides clearer theorybasedguidance on the practice of managing college educationclearly exists.Both theorists and practitioners are invited to submitempirical or theoretical works for a special issue on strategicmanagement in higher education. Accepted papers will bepublished on the Spring 2011 issue of International Journalof Management in Education. Preference will be givento empirical studies that test some hypotheses related toincreasing the competitiveness or efficiency of a certaintype of higher education institute. However, well-developedtheoretical papers with pragmatic implications for strategicdecisions made by college administrators are welcome too.Empirical support of the theoretical hypotheses, if appropriate,may be drawn from either primary or secondary sourcesof data. By contrast,Chinese Management Studies not only focuses on Chineseresearch across the globe, but also provides a distinctive‘insider’ perspective by publishing studies from scholarswithin China.We would like to invite papers for possible publication inChinese Management Studies.Now in its third volume, CMS provides a unique andinsightful approach to documenting and disseminatingresearch into Chinese processes of managing enterprises,firms and corporations. Integrating both qualitative andquantitative research, it provides in-depth analysis of Chinesemanagerial thinking, philosophy and processes, together withempirical pieces on Chinese management.Past special issues have examined ‘China's emergingknowledge economy’ and ‘Emerging themes in Chinesemanagement’.
