WASTEWATER AND POLLUTED RUNOFFWastewater is used water and includes substances such as human waste, food scraps, oils, soaps andchemicals. In homes, this includes water from sinks, showers, bathtubs, toilets, washing machines anddishwashers. Businesses and industries also contribute their share ofused water that must be cleaned.Wastewater also includes storm runoff from heavy rains. AlthoughCooperative EffortObjective #2: Decrease/reduce water pollutionfrom stormwater, sewageand septic dischargesfrom residentialsubdivisions andcommercial areas.some people assume that the rain that runs down the street during astorm is fairly clean, it isn’t. Harmful substances that wash off roads,parking lots, and rooftops can harm our rivers and lakes.Source: USGS, Water Science for SchoolsIssue: The public does not understand the basics of septic tankand sewer system care and maintenance or the potentialimpacts of improperly maintained septic systems.Education Objective #1:To make landowners/homeowners aware oftheir impacts on thewatershed, including theirrecreational impactsparticularly sewage,petroleum products,nutrients, pesticides, boatwakes and litter.<strong>Program</strong> PartnershipObjective#1: Cooperateand develop relationshipswith local municipalities,government officials,governmentalagencies,large landownersand businesses.Action Strategy 1: Develop or adopt educational programs to educateseptic tank owners and sewer system users. This program willhighlight the need for tank inspection and periodic pump out.
