Strokin’ Since 1961S&S® STOCK BORE STROKER KITSStock bore S&S stroker kits were a milestoneproduct in the fledgling v-twin high performanceaftermarket industry, when they were introducedback in 1961. The new S&S strokers offered an easy wayto increase the displacement of an engine simply byinstalling a set of stroker flywheels and pistons. Sincethe majority of the stock engine components werestill used, building a stroker engine was also a prettyeconomical upgrade.S&S flywheels for stroker kits come complete assembled and balanced.Stroker pistons are purchased separately.Today a stock bore stroker kit is still one of the best valuesavailable for a moderate performance increase. Not only arethe parts relatively inexpensive, compared to the cost of acomplete replacement engine, but the installation cost of astock bore stroker is lower than that of big bore kits that requireextensive machining to install. The fact is, installing an S&Sstroker kit is comparable in cost to rebuilding a stock engine.The results, however, are a lot more fun, also a fact!S&S stocks replacement pistons for our stroker kits in a range ofoversizes, so a stroker engine can be rebuilt a number of times,providing a service life that rivals stock.STROKERS FOR 2006 AND BEYONDWe have changed the way we offer stroker kits to our customers,and this is why. In the past we have offered stroker kits that couldbe configured to order, and we gave engine builders a lot of options.We noticed that more and more, customers were ordering strokerkits with fully assembled flywheels. We’d like to think that thisis a testament to the superior quality of our connecting rods andmainshafts, as well as to the work of our professional assembly team.We know that this trend also reflects the realities of economics.It is more cost effective for most shops to install a new, ready-madeflywheel assembly than it is to disassemble a customer’s stockflywheels, rebuild the stock connecting rods, and assemble thestroker flywheels in house. For one thing, the amount of time thatis saved, makes the customers down time much shorter (happiercustomers), and allows the shop to take in more jobs (increasedrevenue). For another, a complete flywheel assembly from S&Scarries a full one year warranty. This is a powerful selling point forthe end user.Our new way of offering stroker kits is simple. We offer flywheelassemblies that can be used with a particular series of pistons, andoffer the pistons separately, in various oversizes. All these partsare stocking items, which means that we will keep them on hand,ready for immediate shipment. With the exception of strokers forHarley-Davidson® Twin Cam 88® engines, which are only availableassembled, we offer configurable flywheel kits that can be orderedin any state of assembly and with or without mainshafts or rods.These special flywheels are for customers who may wish to balanceand assemble the flywheels themselves or have other specialrequirements. Special flywheels are slightly more expensive, andthey will take a little longer to ship because they are manufacturedto order.
