High rpm, stronger valve springs, andhigher lift cams pushed them beyond their limits. That’swhy most hot rod shovelhead motors were typically builtwith solid lifters.That’s why we are offering the S&S hydraulic tappet update kitsfor shovelhead engines. Starting at the bottom and moving up,we developed new designs for tappet guides to accommodatelate style hydraulic lifters and cams. <strong>The</strong> ability to select from themany different camshafts available for 1984-’99 engines gives shovelowners a lot of options, since they can take advantage of moresophisticated cam technology, and choose from a huge number ofcams available. Because the S&S tappet guides are taller than thestock shovelhead guides, traditional pushrods for shovelhead cannot be installed or removed from an assembled engine. To addressthis problem we developed the new S&S Quickee pushrods thatallow for simple and efficient pushrod installation and removal. Thiscombination of components was designed to function with S&Sroller rocker arms and billet rocker covers as the ultimate valve trainupgrade for shovelhead engines, but just as importantly they weredesigned to be compatible with stock rockers as well. (See page35 of this catalog for more information on S&S Quickee pushrods.)<strong>The</strong> S&S hydraulic tappet update kit for shovelhead engines containsS&S billet tappet guides, S&S 1984-’99 style hydraulic tappets,pushrod cover keepers, gaskets, hardware, and a set of S&S Quickeepushrods. <strong>The</strong>re are two kits available. <strong>On</strong>e kit has pushrods withdrilled ends that allow oiling of the top end through the pushrods.Use this kit if you are using S&S roller rocker arms for shovelheadengines. <strong>The</strong> other kit contains Quickee pushrods with solid endswhich prevent oil from traveling through the pushrods. Use this kitif you are using stock shovelhead rocker arms and are oiling the topend with stock style external oil lines.NOTE:S&S billet tappet guides for shovelhead engines are similar indesign to S&S tappet guides for 1984-’99 big twin engines. For thatreason they are not a direct replacement for stock parts, but mustbe used in conjunction with S&S tappets and cams for 1984-'99 bigtwin engines. Tappet bore geometry is corrected to compensatefor the difference in pushrod angles between the engine types inorder to maintain specified valve event timing.
