We stayed in Ypres forthree days to try and get a sense of the tragedy ofWorld War One. We visited the Somme and sawthe land where the worst days of combat loss inthe British military happened and the graveyardsthat accompaniedthem. In one of thegraveyards we visited,we saw the gravestonefor RaymondAsquith, the son ofHerbert Asquith, whowas Prime Ministerduring the war. Notonly did we study thehistory of the warbut we also looked atmany war poetsincluding RupertChina Trip October 2010The highlight of A-Level history this year was ourtrip to China during October half term. As our A2coursework was on Mao’s China, we visited bothBejing and Shanghai to get a feel for Chinese culture,and develop our understanding of the 20thCentury period.What was so wonderful about this trip isthat we were able to experience once in a lifetimeopportunities: not only did we visit high schools inboth cities, making friends with Chinese students(who we are still in contact with!), but we werealso invited to Bejing Normal University for a speciallunch, which followed a history lesson given bya senior professor.Of course we did the “tourist” excursions,visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, theShanghai Museum, and Tiananmen Square, but weThe Battlefields in Belgium 2011
