About Phoneme FactoryThis book is part of the Phoneme Factory Project undertaken by Granada Learning inpartnership with the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit (SLTRU) in Bristol.The project has resulted in a series of products that have been developed for use withchildren who have difficulties with developing speech. Many children in the early yearsof school continue to use immature patterns of speech or show an unusual pattern intheir speech development. These children have no observable cause for their speechdifficulty and are usually described as having a phonological impairment.The Phoneme Factory series consists of Phoneme Factory: Phonology Screener (acomputerised screening test), Phoneme Factory: Sound Sorter (an activity softwareprogram) and this book, Phoneme Factory: Developing Speech and Language Skills.All three products are intended to support teachers and speech and languagetherapists (SLTs) in their work with children who have phonological impairmentsthrough providing interactive activities, ideas for table-top tasks and a means toidentify appropriate programmes for individuals.Also availablePhoneme Factory: Sound Sorter (Published by SEMERC)Phoneme Factory: Sound Sorter consists of seven activities designedto develop children’s listening and awareness of sounds in speech.A range of preset activities, which match commonly founddifficulties in children’s speech, could be used to developphonological awareness. In many cases the child is able to copy the speech soundswhen they hear them produced by an adult, but they are unable touse them in words and sentences.Further settings are available for teachers and SLTs to address the less common speechpatterns. The pictures used in the listening activities can be printed from the programand these are indexed according to the initial and final sounds and can be resized tosuit requirements. The Sound Sorter tool can be used as a follow-up to the PhonologyScreener.1
