Context sensitive voicingSpecific activities to increase awareness of voiceless consonants at thebeginning of wordsImportant: Before trying these activities read the general information about using thelistening and discrimination methods described in Chapter 6.Initial ‘p’Name game: witch storyTarget sound: ‘p’ word initialContrast: ‘b’Words: pea, beeResources: string; Pea Bee and Bee Bee (CD, p. 63). Laminate the characters or stickthem on cardboard and cut them out so they can be attached to a piece of string.ActivityThe characters are tied onto two pieces of string that are hung over a coat hook, so thatpulling on one end of the string results in the characters being lifted up reasonablyhigh. The adult tells a story about a witch. She casts a spell on the characters so thatthey fly up into a tree. The adult shows the child how to slowly pull the string so thecharacter flies a little way at a time. The adult then says the name of the character whoshould move, and the child pulls that string, with the adult giving a non-verbal ‘stop’sign to prevent the character moving far. Once the character is at the top the adultexplains that they can rescue the character (using the character’s name) with the child’shelp. Again the adult names the characters in turn, and the child gradually lets go ofthe string so that the character comes a little way down in each turn.Other characters could be used in this activity: Pig Pig and Big Pig (CD, p. 70) andPear Bear and Bare Bear (CD, p.64).Action gameTarget sound: ‘p’ word initialContrast: ‘b’Words: park, bark; path, bathResources: toy cars (other actions don’t need props)125
