The whole district isinfluenced by the south‐west monsoon which begins generally from May and continues tillSeptember. The weather is humid for the major part of the year except for the relatively dryconditions between the months of December and March.2.10 AGRICULTURE AND CROPPING PATTERNAgriculture is the main occupation of the rural people of East Khasi Hills District in generaland Meghalaya as a whole. Topography, climate and soil are the main factors affecting agriculture inthe District. The main variety of crops of this region can be classified under the following categories:1. Food Crops: Rice, wheat, maize, millets and pulses.2. Commercial Crops: Ginger, Jute, Potato and Sugarcane.3.
