Save Energy’In 2006 the Victorian Government ran an awareness raising advertising and websitecampaign to quantify the emissions of the average Victorian household in an easy tounderstand format. Hundreds of black balloons were depicted with each one representing50 grams of greenhouse gas.According to State Government fi gures, the number of Victorians using governmentaccreditedGreenPower suppliers surged from 80,000 households in December 2005 to157,000 by December 2006.In addition to the television advertising campaign, a website providing factsheets, linksand easy to digest information on why and how to save energy through better effi ciencychoices was established. A series of ‘myth buster’ questions to inform consumers of howto make choices that are environmentally friendly and cost effective.The awareness raising tool has now been adapted for Al Gore’s Climate Campaign, whichis led by Cathy Zoi.Box 6: Australian Conservation Foundation –Online Consumption AtlasThe Australian Conservation Foundation’s Online Consumption Atlas Tool provides aninteractive way for people to calculate their personal greenhouse pollution, water useand eco-footprintThey can then compare their impact with state and national averages and access tipsand suggestions for reducing impact on their ‘Greenhome’ website.The ACF Consumption Atlas approach encourages consumers to make ‘SmartConsumption’ choices, highlighting the fact that much of their impact comes frompollution created and water and land used in the production and distribution of thegoods and services they purchase.The report concludes that strong action to reduce the environmental impacts associatedwith the food they eat and clothes they wear is needed to complement reductions indirect personal water and energy use.26 What Assures Consumers on Climate Change – Australian Update
