4Sarah Flum was named the <strong>Stephen</strong> T. <strong>Badin</strong> medalwinner as the Class <strong>of</strong> 2013 celebrated commencement onFriday, May 24, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in LibertyTownship.The <strong>Stephen</strong> T. <strong>Badin</strong> medal is the highest honor givento a graduating senior. The medal is awarded to thestudent who is voted by the faculty as the most outstandingmember <strong>of</strong> the graduating class in all aspects <strong>of</strong> his or herhigh school career.“Sarah made a very fine contribution throughout her fouryears at <strong>Badin</strong>,” said Principal Brian Pendergest. As a senior,Flum served as Student Council president and spearheaded<strong>Badin</strong>’s support <strong>of</strong> St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital inMemphis, Tenn. “She was a leading light among a stronggroup <strong>of</strong> students.”Of the 100 students in what was <strong>Badin</strong>’s 47th graduatingclass, 15 students earned $100,000 or more in academicscholarship opportunities and 53 were <strong>of</strong>fered academicaid. Nine students were recruited to play college athletics,including two in the Division I baseball ranks.Flum is the daughter <strong>of</strong> Mark and Jeanette Flum <strong>of</strong>Hamilton and a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. Peter in Chains <strong>School</strong>. Shewill attend Ohio University and major in middle schooleducation.Michael Kulifay earned the Archbishop McNicholas medal,honoring the highest level <strong>of</strong> academic achievement. Kulifaywas the valedictorian and will attend Miami University,majoring in accounting. He is the son <strong>of</strong> Joe and AngieKulifay <strong>of</strong> Fairfield Township and a graduate <strong>of</strong> FairfieldMiddle <strong>School</strong>.Kelsey Riley earned the Archbishop Leibold award,honoring the highest level <strong>of</strong> service to the school and thecommunity. Allen, director <strong>of</strong>admissions and media relations. “We talk about the <strong>Badin</strong>family – Kelsey is a great example <strong>of</strong> what the <strong>Badin</strong> familyis all about.”Riley will attend Xavier University and major inoccupational therapy.Christopher Pickerill was awarded the Archbishop Altermedal, honoring the highest contribution to faith lifeat <strong>Badin</strong>. Chris is the son <strong>of</strong> Ted and Dawn Pickerill <strong>of</strong>Hamilton and a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. Peter in Chains <strong>School</strong>. Hewill attend Miami University and major in accounting andpre-med.Pickerill earned more than $500,000 in academicscholarship <strong>of</strong>fers, tops among the 15 members <strong>of</strong> the$100,000 club.“This class will remember their senior year for iPadsand air conditioning,’’ said Pendergest, noting two majorschool-wide enhancements that debuted in August <strong>of</strong> 2012.“We will remember them as a group that spent four yearsmaking a very positive impact on <strong>Badin</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.”Elizabeth McKinley was the salutatorian <strong>of</strong> the Class <strong>of</strong>2013. She is the daughter <strong>of</strong> Brenda McKinley <strong>of</strong> Hamiltonand a graduate <strong>of</strong> Immanuel Lutheran <strong>School</strong>.
