Suez sees future in recycling packaging in
Germany
Suez Environment, through its waste
subsidiary SITA Deutschland
GmbH, has just acquired the majority of
the capital of BellandVision GmbH, a
German licensing and service company
for recycling the packaging of manufacturers
and large-scale retail operations.
Following the agreement signed on 5
December 2007, Suez Environment
holds 68.4 percent of the shares of
BellandVision GmbH.
For the past few years, to meet the
requirements of the European Union,
the German market for the collection,
treatment and recycling of packaging,
has been opened up to competition. This
market was traditionally controlled by a
single entity, the DSD (Duales System
Deutschland GmbH). Following liberalisation
other players have appeared in
this market segment, like BellandVision.
Today BellandVision is a major player
in the packaging-recycling market in
Germany.This Bavarian company, whose
2007 gross revenues are estimated at
EUR35m, operates a packaging recycling
contribution system with 100
large-scale retail companies and 1,800
manufacturers.
With this strategic acquisition, SITA
Deutschland, which already operates in
all of Germany through 123 facilities,
including transfer stations, sorting centers
and composting platforms, is
expanding its offerings by entering a new
market segment and thus becomes a lead
player in the sector of selective collection,
recycling and reuse of packaging in
Germany.
‘The German waste market is a competitive
sector but first and foremost a
true laboratory of ideas and new technologies
from which other European
countries could draw inspiration in the
coming years’, said Jean-Louis
Chaussade, CEO of Suez Environment,
‘Because it will reinforce us over the
entire value chain in Germany, this
acquisition is in line with the economic
model that we are following in our waste
activities.’
In a German waste market that is
booming and particularly in the packaging
segment, which is growing and is
already valued at EUR1.5bn, this latest
step enables Suez Environment to position
itself in a key segment of the waste
sector, which promises to have a bright

future in that country, and to offer intergrated
services to its industrial and commercial
customers.
Suez has been present in Germany
since 1967 in the water supply and waste
clearance businesses.
In the waste business line, Suez
Environment is represented by SITA
Deutschland GmbH, which is among
the leading companies in the waste management
sector in Germany. SITA
Deutschland handles the collection and
sorting of waste and, in some areas, is
present throughout the entire waste cycle
from collection to treatment. SITA
Deutschland has over 60,000 industrial
and commercial customers. It serves
approximately 10 million inhabitants in
almost 1,000 German cities and municipalities.
The company has 3,500
employees and operates throughout the
entire territory with a fleet of 1,500
trucks and through 123 waste treatment
and recycling facilities, including 123
transfer stations, sorting centers, and
composting platforms.
In 2006, SITA Deutschland had gross
revenues of EUR472m.
