6.0 Open Space & RecreationThis chapter provides an inventory <strong>of</strong> the town’s existing open space and recreation resources.These resources play a critical role in the quality <strong>of</strong> life in <strong>Westerly</strong>, serving as important naturalresource protection areas, providing opportunities for leisure and exercise, and helping to preservethe character <strong>of</strong> the town. Identifying existing open spaces, recreation facilities and recreationprograms will help the town properly plan for future needs.6.1 <strong>Planning</strong> Context6.1.1 <strong>State</strong>wide <strong>Planning</strong> ContextThis chapter is presented in the context <strong>of</strong> several state planning resources including Land Use 2025,A Greener Path…Greenspace and Greenways for <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong>’s Future and Ocean <strong>State</strong> Outdoors: <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong>’sComprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan.Land Use 2025 serves as the foundation for all planning efforts in <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong>. With regard toopen space and recreation, Land Use 2025 poses a series <strong>of</strong> questions to be addressed when settingand implementing objectives and policies that specifically relate to open space and recreation. Forfurther information regarding these guiding questions, Land Use 2025 can be found atwww.planning.state.ri.us.While Land Use 2025 establishes a framework for open space and recreation planning, A Greener Pathand Ocean <strong>State</strong> Outdoors, assess statewide needs and provide specific goals and policies thatmunicipalities should adhere to in their comprehensive plans.
