A <strong>Life</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Day</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nixdown</strong> <strong>Nixon</strong>team that swept <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g trophies androsettes wherever we went. ‘We’ be<strong>in</strong>g Penny Ann,Jojo, Claire Brooks and I.Penelope Ann Evans was <strong>the</strong> eldest amongstus and <strong>the</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team. She was always quietand reserved but she was a fabulous rider and led byexample. What a team we were. My dearest, life-longchum Jojo was <strong>the</strong> heart and soul <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team. On <strong>the</strong>rare occasions th<strong>in</strong>gs were not go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>o well shewould rally us and <strong>in</strong>spire us with her fearlessperformances.Claire Brooks always looked as if she hadstepped <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> cover <strong>of</strong> Country <strong>Life</strong>. Long and li<strong>the</strong>,prist<strong>in</strong>e and elegant, and <strong>the</strong>n she would open hermouth. Claire’s mo<strong>the</strong>r used <strong>to</strong> attend most meetsand I can’t tell you how many times we witnessedpoor old Claire be<strong>in</strong>g unceremoniously yanked acrossher mo<strong>the</strong>r’s knees <strong>to</strong> be soundly spanked with awood-backed hairbrush for potty-mouth<strong>in</strong>g,regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> audience.I was <strong>the</strong> problem-child <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>fact I was <strong>of</strong>ten between schools due <strong>to</strong> myunfortunate habit <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g expelled. When I was unavailable our first reserve SarahForsham-Smy<strong>the</strong> would take my place. Sarah <strong>of</strong>course is <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> billionairess MelissaForsham-Smy<strong>the</strong>. Melissa was always apoplectic tha<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>f-spr<strong>in</strong>g was not a first choice and it is onlyrecently that we have learned <strong>the</strong> extremes that shewas will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong> order for her daughter <strong>to</strong> get<strong>to</strong> ride <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olympics.
