She is an absolute doteand as mad as a March Hare. She hails from one ofthe nations oldest and most respected family’s andwas brought up surrounded by maids, valets andliveried footmen. Nonetheless she has taken to thelife of a grubby with remarkable enthusiasm andtends to Deborah’s every need morning, noon andnight.I thank her and make a final adjustment to theknot of my tie so that it is seated neatly in a perfectvee and fully covering the top button of my blouse.Derby returns with a mug of coffee. “Is thereanything else I can get for you, Ma’am?” she asks.We have been trying to cure Derby of callingus Ma’am except in public, when it is a requiredprotocol, but she just giggles and ignores us. I tell herthat I’m fine and she tells me she will cut along andget everything prepared for Deborah’s return fromher run. No sooner has Derby departed than there isanother knock on the door.“Come,” I call and Yvonne Godfrey and JanetMitchell shuffle into the room.“Reporting for duty, Ma’am,” mutters Yvonne.
