MELA NOTES 27, FALL, 1982 37Misc. Problems, CriticsmsThere is some evidence that the editors ignored orforgot their own time specifications when determiningwhich titles to include. While the user's guide specifiesthe modern Middle East as the focus of Mideast File, citations to works on premodern history were noted.(Eventhe broadest definition of "Modern" would be strained toinclude Daniel Pipes's Slave Soldiers and Islam (1414)or Islam and the Medieval West, ed. by Khalid Semaan(#423). Similarly, while the user's guide states that"books are included ... up to one year after their publication,"(which presumably means that only 1981 and1982 imprints would be found in the March '82 issue) therewere a number of titles from 1977-1979, and even one from1975 (# 812). Either the editors should redefine theircriteria for inclusion, or follow those they have indicatedmore carefully.A casual proofreading of the author index revealeda great number of typographical errors: Al-thman for al-'Uthman; Blake, F. H. for Blake, G. H., Van- Dam, M. forDam, N. Van, and so on. A most unfortunate feature ofthe computer program used to produce Mideast File is itsinability to collate identical citations whose annotationsvary. Thus, for example, Albert Hourani's threeappearances in the author index all refer to his TheEmergence of the Modern Middle East, which appears in themain text three times consecutively (Items 49-51), eachtime with a citation to a different book review. Thismistake occurs in about half of the sections of MideastFile where books are listed and is responsible for addingabout a dozen repeat entries. In a few cases, theeditors failed to verify citations, resulting in bibliographicallyinaccurate entries or extraneous citations. For example, Walter Weiker's book The Modernization ofTurkey is entered twice (1437, 1441). The first citationis correct but incomplete (lacks ISBN) and the secondcontains three errors (title and pagination wrong, author's name misspelled). One helpful feature of Mideast File are notices ofbook reviews appended to the citation for books. Thereview notices, like entries for the books themselves, are not annotated. Nor are the authors of reviews listedin the author index. This is unfortunate, because it isprobably something that could be accomplished with littleextra effort or expense, while enhancing the usefulnessof the author index. The editors fail to explain justhow exhaustively and where they have searched for theirbook review citations; such information is essential. One final problem: non-Western titles are listed in
