Although the data is outdated It still gives an idea of which sectors is economicviable in the area. <strong>Co</strong>nsequently the following anticipated sector trends are applicable to the <strong>Msukaligwa</strong> Municipal Area.Breyten /KwazaneleBreyten used to be one of the largest railway connections in South Africa. However during 1970 — 1980 the withdrawal of the steam trajectory of the SouthAfrican Railway Services had a significant negative influence on the economic structure of the town. The town has a very low economic base, with DuikerMining and the <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Co</strong>uncil as the major employer. Agriculture and mining are the basic economic activities in the area. However most of the people areemployed in the wholesale and trade sectors.3.5 PRODUCTION PROFILEProduction can be seen as an indicator of the magnitude and value of economic activity at a given point in time. The reason for this is because economic activityis generally measured in terms of production/output. By analysing economic activity over tithe, one can detect structural changes that are taking place in theeconomy. The future growth and strategic direction in the economy can be determined with this information. For analytic purposes the Gross GeographicProduct (GGP) is used as .an indicator of economic activity. The economy is subdivided into three sectors, namely:Primary sector• Agriculture/hunting/forestry/fishing• Mining quarryingSecondary sector• Manufacturing• Electricity/gas/Water• <strong>Co</strong>nstructionTertiary sector• Trade/catering• Transport /communications• Finance/real estate• Government/community servicesHowever, sources of economic trends & <strong>Msukaligwa</strong> are unsatisfactory due to outdated data or data only applicable to the provincial economy. Data wasobtained from the Spatial Development Framework1 for <strong>Msukaligwa</strong> <strong>Municipality</strong> and Ermelo Economic Development Programme2.
