Volume 66, Issue 2 October 31, 2012Matias BuenoContributorThis year in the NFL manypeople are already starting to talkabout one of the most anticipatedawards from draft nightall the way until thepost season; the rookieof the year. There are5 key players (all QBsas well) in particularwho are beingmonitored throughoutthis season. There isBrandon Weeden ofthe Cleveland Browns,Ryan Tannehill ofthe Miami Dolphins,Russell Wilson of theSeattle Seahawks,Andrew Luck of theIndianapolis Colts and RobertGriffin III of the WashingtonRedskins. I will look at some of thekey aspects that determine how theyare performing such as stats, debutand overall success and give each agrade based on this.First let’s talk about BrandonWeeden. He was drafted out ofOklahoma State at the age of 29,which is very old considering he’sa rookie. This yearhis team isn’t so hotsitting at last in theleague at 1-6. Hehas led Clevelandto only one win, which of coursewas the battleof Ohio againstthe Bengals.Weeden has hadsome poor, decentand one stellarperformance. HisQB passer ratingis 72.3, which isalright some couldsay. He has hadthree games witha rating of over 90,with one of thoseover 100. His debut was a brutaldisplay of football though. Weedenthrew four picks, was sacked twiceand fumbled the two times he rushed. That game his passer rating was 5.1.Not very good for Browns fans. He isprobably the least impressive rookieSportsNFL FootballA deep look at potential Rookie-of-the-Year candidatesthis season, and I certainly wouldn’tfeel comfortable seeing him as thefirst string if I were a fan.Grade: DNext is Ryan Tannehill. Hecame from Texas A&M and is 24years old. The Miami Dolphins aredoing alright for themselves sittingat 3-3. His QB passer rating isn’tmuch higher than Weeden’s at 76.5.Tannehill did have one exceptionalperformance though against theCardinals in week 4. He broke theold rookie record for most passingyards in a game held by DanMarino. He passed for 431 yards andaveraged 11 yards per completion.Besides that he usually plays wellfor a rookie. He has had only twogames this season with a passerrating under 80, so I think he’s fit asthe starter for Miami. He’s no DanMarino or anything but he isn’t aRyan Leaf. He has good potential totake the Dolphins farther this yearthan last year, that’s for sure.Grade: B-Up next is RussellWilson of the SeattleSeahawks. Most fans mayremember his famous“Intertouchdownception,”or if that’s a mouthful, “FailMary” is easier to say. Iwon’t get into that though,Green Bay fans are stilltrying to forget that game.Ironically though he wasdrafted out of Wisconsin.Wilson has big shoes tofill this season since MattHasselbeck, Seattle’s former greatleader on offence, is with theTitans now. Last year the Seahawksacquired former Green Bay back upMatt Flynn, but he didn’t take themanywhere. This season Wilson has apasser rating slightly better than ourlast two QBs, at 79.5. This season heeither has a really good game, or aterrible game. He isn’t as consistentas fans had hoped. The Seahawks are4-3, which is better than the Brownsand the Dolphins, sopeople could saythat Wilson is doingalright for himself. His debut was ratherpoor, considering he18/34 for only 153yards, 1 TD and 1pick. He is not a badrookie, but could bemore consistent.Grade: C+Up now isPeyton Manning’sr e p l a c e m e n t ,Andrew Luck. Hewas drafted firstoverall, so onecould say fans would expect a lotfrom him. His passer rating is tiedwith Weeden’s actually at 72.3. Sofar he hasn’t reached stardom onthe field yet. The Colts are sittingat 500 with 3 wins. One of thosewins was a well fought, and well23
