Guilford Coast Guard AuxiliaryPaddlesmart Safety CourseThe Paddle Smart Safety course is an introduction tosafely operating a paddlecraft. This is a four hour coursethat will introduce you to general information aboutnavigating, safety rules and legal requirements, gettingunderway with a paddlecraft and how to handlepaddlecraft emergencies.Ages: 14 upDates March 29 Days ThursdayTime 5:30-9:30 pm Fee $25.00Facility Held: Memorial Town Hall Upper LevelPiloting and ChartingThe Piloting and Charting course is the first of threecourses on navigation, covering the basics of coastaland inland navigation. This course focuses on traditionaltechniques so the student will be able to find his/her wayeven if their GPS fails. The course includes many inclassexercises, developing the student’s skills throughhands-on practice and learning. Topics covered includebut not limited to Charts and their interpretation,Navigation aids and how they point to safe water ,Plotting courses and determining direction and distance,The mariner’s compass and converting between Trueand Magnetic, Pre-planning safe courses, The“Seaman’s Eye” simple skills for checking that one is oncourse. We play at Portland West every other week.As a group you can decide where you play every otherweek. Group meets at the Madison Senior Center everyTuesday morning before heading for the course so youcan plan, talk about directions, car pool, etc. A cateredluncheon will be held at the end of the season at theMadison Senior Center Café.
