Chapter 2Who is Uninsured in Indiana?This report presents the <strong>findings</strong> of the <strong>2003</strong> Health Insurance for Indiana’s FamiliesSurvey. It examines the overall level of uninsurance and presents detailedinformation regarding the characteristics of the uninsured in Indiana based on thehousehold data.Several characteristics of Indiana’s population were analyzed in addition to the basichealth insurance coverage information. Analysis was performed to determineuninsurance rates according to characteristics such as age, race/ethnicity,employment status, family income, education, and marital status. Likewise, analysiswas done to assess whether some groups are disproportionately uninsured comparedto their representation in the population as a whole. This latter analysis also includesan assessment of the statistical significance of any observed differences, and isavailable in tabular form in Appendix D.What is the Overall Level of Uninsurance in Indiana?Overall, 9.2% of Indiana residents are uninsured according to the <strong>2003</strong> Health Insurancefor Indiana’s Families Survey. The rates associated <strong>with</strong> the various sources of coverageare displayed in Figure 2-1. Over three-fifths (61.2%) of the people in Indiana arecovered by health insurance through an employer. An additional 3.5% purchasedprivate individual insurance. Indiana’s public programs cover 26.2% of thepopulation. For context, the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS)2001 estimate of uninsurance for Indiana is 11.8%.Figure 2-1.
