LSTC Gospel Choir celebrates 25 yearsof sharing the gospel message in songby Jessica Houston, assistant vice president for advancementMany Voices, One Story: Celebration in theAugustana Chapel at LSTC.Connecting to LSTC’s 50th Anniversary theme, thisyear’s concert will be a celebration of 25 years ofmusic and ministry activities that have enrichedthe lives of many within the LSTC community andbeyond. The anniversary concert will include specialmusical guests and performance artists that haveparticipated in previous concerts. There will also bespecial displays of memorabilia, pictures and artifactsfrom the 25 years of the choir’s travel in theUnited States and abroad.Justin Tigerman (middler) and the LSTC Gospel ChoirA very special invitation is being made to alumniof the choir. “We want to have as many alumnichoir members join us for this celebration, as wepresent an alumni choir and perform at least onemusical selection,” said Ms. Patricia Bartley, choirfounder.Multicultural, multi-ethnic, intergenerational,ecumenicalThe Gospel Choir began in 1987, when PatriciaBartley, LSTC registrar, invited a group of studentsand staff to join together in song in honor of theRev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a special worshipservice. Afterwards, Bartley extended the invitationto the entire seminary community to keep thegospel choir going.Over the years, this invitation resulted in achoir that was multicultural, multi-ethnic, interfaith,and intergenerational. Its members includedcurrent students, alumni, faculty, staff, other seminarystudents and lay persons from Chicago areacongregations. The membership is as diverse todayas it was at its beginning.Songs and scholarshipsThe choir regularly sings during weekly chapel serviceon campus as well as for annual celebrationssuch as commencement and convocation. Theyhave shared their wonderful music ministry withLutheran congregations in Metropolitan Chicagoand the surrounding synods, and with churches ofother denominations and organizations. The choirhas been blessed with several opportunities to travelabroad to share the gospel message in song, both inTanzania and South Africa.One of the most important initiatives of thechoir has been establishing two student scholarshipfunds: The Grover Wright and Rev. Carole A.Burns Scholarships. The Grover Wright ScholarshipFund was established in 1989 in honor of the lateGrover Wright, who was the associate director of theDivision for Professional Leadership of the LutheranChurch in America. He encouraged persons ofcolor to become pastors and leaders in the church.The scholarship is awarded to students of Africandescent, persons of color, or whose first language isnot English.The Carole A. Burns Memorial Scholarship Fundwas established in 2002 to honor the life and ministryof the Rev. Carole A. Burns. Burns, an LSTC alum, memberof the Gospel Choir, and one of the founders of theGrover Wright Fund, remained active with the choiruntil her passing in 2001. The Burns Scholarship isawarded to African-American women studying ministryat LSTC. Many Voices, One Story:LSTC’s First Twenty Years1962-1982“Chaotic but cheerful” is how Professor EmeritusJames Scherer described LSTC’s first years in a 50thanniversary forum held on October 18. Three emeritusfaculty members, Philip Hefner, Wilhelm Linss,and James Scherer, shared memories and insightsabout LSTC’s first 20 years.Scherer recalled that in the first months at 1100East 55th Street, the faculty offices still lacked walls,the administrators and deans were in cubicles set upin the first floor of the library wing, and the openingconvocation was held in an unfinished ChapelAuditorium. Nonetheless, they were “so happy to behere. The architecture, with the glass curtain wallsembodied what we were about—emphasizing anopenness to the world.”The three recalled the turbulent times of LSTC’sbeginning. “Everyone was doing teach-ins. TheUniversity of Chicago administration building wasoccupied for 51 days by the students,” Scherer said.Phil Hefner stated that during the 1960s “studentswere radicalized in the sense of wanting to bepart of the power process and insisting that they playan important role (in institutional decisions).” Herecalled that the assassination of Dr. Martin LutherKing Jr. hit LSTC hard and that students organized toinitiate an anti-racism program for the entire IllinoisSynod. They were not successful in getting a meetingwith the bishop and, Hefner says, they “raised hell.”Dr. Wilhelm Linss provided another perspective.He and several colleagues came to LSTC fromCentral Seminary in Fremont, Neb. They were theonly predecessor school to be required, by the newLutheran Church in America, to become part ofLSTC. The other predecessor schools had made theirown choice to merge.Linss said that he and his Central colleagueswere well-received by the other LSTC faculty. Hewas asked to become registrar shortly after he joinedthe faculty, which provided some balance to anadministration that was largely from the Augustanatradition.
