We’re All InLSTC staff members respond to matching gift challengeby Rachel Wind (2010, M.Div.) regional gift officer“I think it’s important to remember to not takepeople or things for granted. This is a lesson I’velearned through experience,” said Cheryl Hoth,assistant to the Dean in her letter to LSTC staff.She encouraged them to give a small portion oftheir paychecks back to the school she has cometo love in her five years at LSTC. And the staff hasresponded.A generous matching grant from Mark andKathy Helge to LSTC presented an opportunity tocheck the barometer for annual giving from all constituencies—includingstaff, faculty, and students.We discovered that staff giving had seen a steepdecline following the end of the Equipping theSaints for Ministry Campaign. So we asked for helpto turn this around.Staff share their commitment in AnnualFund videoThree staff representatives were selected to meetwith members of the Advancement Office to helpdetermine the best way to engage the larger staff.Kenesa Debela, director of information technologyservices; Cheryl Hoth, assistant to the dean and vicepresident for academic affairs; and Paul Knutson,facilities operation manager hesitantly agreed tohelp, but all of them were wary of having to ask anyof their colleagues for money. Conversations withstaff revealed that they were feeling exhausted and abit stressed following recent major decisions in thelife of the institution. The atmosphere did not seemconducive to an appeal for staff giving to the AnnualFund.But the staff representatives had some ideas. PaulKnutson, who is currently completing a degree infilm-making, suggested making a video that showshow the staff at LSTC are impacted by the AnnualFund. He and I conducted interviews with a numberof staff members and Paul edited it masterfully. Staffmembers whose voices may not have been heardbefore were given an opportunity to share what theylove about this place and also their dreams for thefuture.Staff gifts matched by Helge Annual FundChallenge GrantIn September, LSTC staff members were invited toa party at Goose Island Brewery in Chicago to celebratetheir commitment to the Annual Fund andto LSTC. The party was exclusively for the staff, toremind them that they are valued and an integralpart of the whole of LSTC. It was a huge success.By the end of September, staff giving to theAnnual Fund was higher than it had been four yearsago during the last year of the Equipping the Saintsfor Ministry Campaign when pledges were still beingcompleted and the staff was larger.There's more good news: most of the gifts arerecurring gifts as automatic paycheck withdrawals,so the gifts will continue to grow each month. Mostof these gifts are new or renewed, which means theywill be matched 100% by the Helge Matching GiftChallenge, nearly doubling their impact.LSTC staff have committed to our seminaryand its future in a way that is undeniably positiveand forward-thinking. It’s very clear that despiterecent changes in the school, the staff still believesin LSTC’s mission. Partnership with Hispanic Theological InstituteConsortium benefits LSTC, doctoral scholarsby Jan BodenThe Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC)is proud to be among the founding members of theHTI Consortium. Our membership in and supportfor the HTI consortium is an important aspect ofLSTC’s commitment to Hispanic ministry. Over thelast 30 years, LSTC’s master of theology and doctorof philosophy program have become a major centerfor training Spanish-speaking scholars for servicethroughout North and South America. Master’slevel students may complete a Hispanic MinistryEmphasis at LSTC, fulfilling both academic and practicaldegree requirements to be equipped to ministerin Hispanic faith communities. All LSTC degree studentsalso may take advantage of the considerableresources of Chicago area seminaries, libraries, communities,and agencies to enhance their HispanicMinistry studies. Five doctoral graduates receivedHTI fellowships and are now serving as programdirectors, leaders in their denominations, independentscholars, and mentors to other HTI fellows.LSTC is fortunate to have two HTI doctoral scholarscurrently in residence.“LSTC values its deep relationship with HTI. Ourcommunity has benefitted from the presence of HTIscholarship recipients on our campus,” says Deanand Vice President for Academic Affairs MichaelShelley. “We are committed to Spanish languagetheological education as a part of our mission for thepresent and the future. As the marks of our seminaryinclude ‘multicultural’ and ‘global,’ we understandthat HTI helps us fulfill our mission. HTI helps bringus to the diversity to which God calls us.”Cheryl Stewart Pero, director of the Albert “Pete”Pero Jr Multicultural Center at LSTC, says, “One ofthe concerns with which communities of color wrestleis the recruitment, training, and placement offuture theologians and scholars of color. The HTI hasinsured that Lutheranism will not have a deficit ofHispanic scholars. LSTC is blessed by the presence ofHispanic women and men on campus and the ELCAis enriched by the ministry of Hispanic scholars andtheologians.”Jonathan PimentelChacón (2010-2011HTIC First –Year,Second-Year, andComprehensive ExamYear Doctoral Scholar)is focusing his studiesin systematic theologyon the intersection andunity of space, freedomand form in Christiantheology. He is interestedin Latin AmericanJonathan Pimentel Chacónliberation theologies, theliterature of Juan CarlosOnetti, Marxism and theology, and the history ofthe flesh in the Western tradition and patristics.HTI mentor Luis Rivera-Pagan suggested LSTC as aplace for Jonathan to find the resources to pursuehis diverse theological interests. Jonathan is a facultymember of the Universidad Biblica Latinoamericanaand the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, wherehe also directs the theological journal, Revista deTeologia Siwo.Crystal Silva-McCormick (2011-2012HTIC First-Year DoctoralScholar) is pursuingdoctoral studies thatbring together interestsin Latina theology,Christian-Muslim relations,and comparativereligion. “I want tosee how Muslims havecreated a ‘Hispano-Muslim’ culture and Ican utilize my fluency Crystal Silva-McCormickin Spanish to study theprimary sources.” Shewill be spending the summer of 2012 in Jordan, tostudy Arabic and immerse herself in Muslim culture.Crystal is also pursuing ordination in the UnitedChurch of Christ.25
