Partnership with Hispanic Theological InstituteConsortium benefits LSTC, doctoral scholarsby Jan BodenThe Lu<strong>the</strong>ran <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> <strong>at</strong> Chicago (LSTC)is proud to be among <strong>the</strong> founding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>HTI Consortium. Our membership in and supportfor <strong>the</strong> HTI consortium is an important aspect <strong>of</strong>LSTC’s commitment to Hispanic ministry. Over <strong>the</strong>last 30 years, LSTC’s master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology and doctor<strong>of</strong> philosophy program have become a major centerfor training Spanish-speaking scholars for servicethroughout North and South America. Master’slevel students may complete a Hispanic MinistryEmphasis <strong>at</strong> LSTC, fulfilling both academic and practicaldegree requirements to be equipped to ministerin Hispanic faith communities. All LSTC degree studentsalso may take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> considerableresources <strong>of</strong> Chicago area seminaries, libraries, communities,and agencies to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir HispanicMinistry studies. Five doctoral gradu<strong>at</strong>es receivedHTI fellowships and are now serving as programdirectors, leaders in <strong>the</strong>ir denomin<strong>at</strong>ions, independentscholars, and mentors to o<strong>the</strong>r HTI fellows.LSTC is fortun<strong>at</strong>e to have two HTI doctoral scholarscurrently in residence.“LSTC values its deep rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with HTI. Ourcommunity has benefitted from <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> HTIscholarship recipients on our campus,” says Deanand Vice President for Academic Affairs MichaelShelley. “We are committed to Spanish language<strong>the</strong>ological educ<strong>at</strong>ion as a part <strong>of</strong> our mission for <strong>the</strong>present and <strong>the</strong> future. As <strong>the</strong> marks <strong>of</strong> our seminaryinclude ‘multicultural’ and ‘global,’ we understandth<strong>at</strong> HTI helps us fulfill our mission. HTI helps bringus to <strong>the</strong> diversity to which God calls us.”Cheryl Stewart Pero, director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Albert “Pete”Pero Jr Multicultural Center <strong>at</strong> LSTC, says, “One <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> concerns with which communities <strong>of</strong> color wrestleis <strong>the</strong> recruitment, training, and placement <strong>of</strong>future <strong>the</strong>ologians and scholars <strong>of</strong> color. The HTI hasinsured th<strong>at</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ranism will not have a deficit <strong>of</strong>Hispanic scholars. LSTC is blessed by <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong>Hispanic women and men on campus and <strong>the</strong> ELCAis enriched by <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>of</strong> Hispanic scholars and<strong>the</strong>ologians.”Jon<strong>at</strong>han PimentelChacón (2010-2011HTIC First –Year,Second-Year, andComprehensive ExamYear Doctoral Scholar)is focusing his studiesin system<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>the</strong>ologyon <strong>the</strong> intersection andunity <strong>of</strong> space, freedomand form in Christian<strong>the</strong>ology. He is interestedin L<strong>at</strong>in AmericanJon<strong>at</strong>han Pimentel Chacónliber<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong>ologies, <strong>the</strong>liter<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> Juan CarlosOnetti, Marxism and <strong>the</strong>ology, and <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> flesh in <strong>the</strong> Western tradition and p<strong>at</strong>ristics.HTI mentor Luis Rivera-Pagan suggested LSTC as aplace for Jon<strong>at</strong>han to find <strong>the</strong> resources to pursuehis diverse <strong>the</strong>ological interests. Jon<strong>at</strong>han is a facultymember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Universidad Biblica L<strong>at</strong>inoamericanaand <strong>the</strong> Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, w<strong>here</strong>he also directs <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological journal, Revista deTeologia Siwo.Crystal Silva-McCormick (2011-2012HTIC First-Year DoctoralScholar) is pursuingdoctoral studies th<strong>at</strong>bring toge<strong>the</strong>r interestsin L<strong>at</strong>ina <strong>the</strong>ology,Christian-Muslim rel<strong>at</strong>ions,and compar<strong>at</strong>ivereligion. “I want tosee how Muslims havecre<strong>at</strong>ed a ‘Hispano-Muslim’ culture and Ican utilize my fluency Crystal Silva-McCormickin Spanish to study <strong>the</strong>primary sources.” Shewill be spending <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 2012 in Jordan, tostudy Arabic and immerse herself in Muslim culture.Crystal is also pursuing ordin<strong>at</strong>ion in <strong>the</strong> UnitedChurch <strong>of</strong> Christ.25
