Healso preached at the jointReformation Day Serviceat the Wartburg LutheranParish in Southern Illinoison October 28.Carol Schersten LaHurd,lecturer in world religions,in July, presented“Understanding Islamand Muslims: EngagingIslam, the Qur’an, and OurMuslim Neighbors” as partof God, Our Neighborhood,and Ourselves, VacationBible School at theCongregational Church ofJefferson Park UCC, and ledthe Bible study session onJoseph in Genesis at HolyTrinity Lutheran Church,Chicago.With Mark Swanson,Schersten LaHurd led aChristian-Muslim ResourceWorkshop for area congregationalleaders on October20 at St. Paul’s LutheranChurch in Evanston, IL.Lea Schweitz, assistantprofessor of systematic theology/religionand scienceand director of the ZygonCenter for Religion andScience, in April, served as arespondent for Dr. TerrenceFretheim’s paper, “God andthe Problem of Evil” at theEcumenical Roundtable onScience, Technology, andthe Church, held at TheLutheran Center, Chicago.She presented the paper,“Imago dei, Incarnation,and the Stakes for Mind-Body Dualism” at the LogosWorkshop at the Universityof Notre Dame in May.Schweitz presented “‘…myths are the earliestforms of science’: Mythsand the Natural World” asan invited panelist for apost-performance discussionof Mary Zimmerman’s“Metamorphoses” at theLookingglass Theater inChicago on October 21.Schweitz also was the invitedchair for “Leibniz’s Theodicy:Reception and Relevance”hosted by the Center forPhilosophy of Religion,University of Notre Dame atthe Pestana Palace in Lisbon,Portugal, in late October.Ben Stewart, Gordon A.Braatz Assistant Professorof Worship and dean ofthe chapel, was a plenaryspeaker and workshoppresenter at the NorthAmerican Association forthe Catechumenate andthe Associated Parishes forLiturgy and Mission Annualgatherings in Chicago onJune 27–29. He also presented“Theological Motifsin Artistic Accounts of theDeath of Christ” at the Artsin August series at GraceLutheran Church in RiverForest, Ill., on August 19.Stewart’s “WorshipWithout Walls: TakingLiturgy to the Streets”was the cover story in theOctober 3, 2012, issue ofThe Christian Century.Mark Swanson, HaroldS. Vogelaar Professor ofChristian-Muslim Studiesand Interfaith Relations,delivered the paper, “TheStory of Fakhr al-Dawlah ibnal-Mu’taman: Priest’s Son,Muslim Grandee, Monk ofSt. Antony,” at the 14th St.Shenouda Conference ofCoptic Studies, UCLA, inJuly. He was one of threepresenters at the South WestInterfaith Team (SWIFT)forum topic “Angels inScriptures,” in Palos Park, Ill.,in September. Swanson wasthe keynote speaker at the2012 General Assembly ofthe Association of Lutheransof Arab and Middle EasternHeritage (ALAMEH), inChicago in October.Christine Wenderoth,director, JKM Library,attended the AmericanTheological LibraryAssociation AnnualConference in Scottsdale,Ariz., in June where shegave the paper “TheologicalReading: Reading Backward,Reading Forward” (to bepublished in the upcoming2012 ATLA Proceedings).She also did a poster sessioncalled “Who Am I?Identifying Librarians inthe 1957 Conference GroupPhoto,” and served as amentor in the CreatingLeaders of Tomorrow program.Wenderoth was thesupply preacher at EvanshirePresbyterian Church, Skokie,Ill., on September 30, andat St. James PresbyterianChurch in Chicago onOctober 14.Vítor Westhelle, professorof systematic theology, wasfeatured in an interviewin the Brazilian LutheranChurch newspaper, “JorevLuterano” Read the articleonline at http://www.luteranos.com.br/portal/jorev/topico .php?EdicaoID=64&EditoriaID=13.In August, Westhelle wasa consultation member atthe Luther Congress 2012 atHelsinki, and spoke at thepastor's conference in PortoAlegre, Brazil. Hepresented “Re-appropriationof the Lutheran Identity”and “What Aspectsof Lutheran TheologyContribute to a HolisticDevelopment Model?” Healso preached at the CastleChurch.With Kurt Hendel,Westhelle published"Theology of the Cross: ATheology of Revelation anda Lutheran Understanding,"in the October issue of TheLutheran magazine.27
