Visionary Leaders ScholarshipsFirst awarded in 2011, Visionary Leaders Scholarships aremerit-based scholarships awarded to students whose giftsand goals make them a particularly good match for thetype of ministry formation LSTC provides. Scholarships areawarded for tuition for a student’s three years of master ofdivinity coursework.Deans Scholarships provide one half of the cost of tuition. Thisyear’s recipients are juniors Amy Loehndorf, Jade Gandrud, JosephYucha, and Sarah Bolick, pictured, along with juniors Cesar AbelArroyo Traverso and Aaron Shoppa and middlers Elizabeth Lowry andKatherine Tuttle.Presidential Scholarships provide full tuition grants. 2012-2013recipients are Rachel Brocker (middler), Angela Storer (middler),Justin Tigerman (middler) and Marissa Tweed (junior).Servant Scholarships provide grants tocover one quarter of the cost of tuition. AllisonBengfort (junior) and Marie Sager (middler),pictured, and Christopher Thomas, StephanieBerkas, and Megan Sawyer are the 2012-2013recipients.Hope Scholarships are based onneed or merit and awarded to studentsof color who will be the firstin their families to become a pastor.These awards may be used for tuitionor expenses. Willie Lee (junior), pictured,and Anthony Harper (junior),Annette Hernandez (junior) and RubyBurwell Lee (junior) received HopeScholarships this year.Advanced Studies fellowship recipientsTwenty-seven students in LSTC’s doctoral programsreceived fellowships totaling almost$62,000 for the 2012-2013 year. LSTC providedfinancial aid scholarships totaling over$146,000 for 34 students to support theircoursework and continuing studies. Three internationalstudents received ELCA Global Mission Partnership Fellowships for bothtuition and living expenses. Two students received fellowships through A Centerof Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice. In addition to those noted below, IskandarBcheiry was the first recipient of the Esperanza de Santa Maria Fellowship and Una Stroda received theInternational Women’s Scholarship.“LSTC is grateful to the many generous people who have created fellowships and scholarshipsthat support the next generation of theologians and teachers studying at here. Through their generosity,we are able to provide assistance toalmost half of LSTC’s doctor of philosophystudents,” said Esther Menn, director ofAdvanced Studies. “These awards mean somuch to students who are called to thisspecialized ministry of theological education.Their ministry will prepare manyothers, around the world, to be visionaryleaders for the church.”Crystal Silva-McCormick and RichardFrontjes received the Robert MarshallSeo Young Lee, Mary Tororeiy, Chingboi Guite, and Emanuel Penumaka receivedWilliam J. and Elizabeth M. Danker Fellowships designated for international doctoralstudents, especially those studying World Christianity. Other Danker Fellowsnot pictured are Niveen Sarras and Chakravarthy Zadda.Graduate Fellowship designated for NorthAmerican doctoral students.20
Ayse Arslan and Tanveer Azmat received fellowshipsfrom A Center of Christian-Muslim Engagement forPeace and Justice. Arslan also received the Eleanorand Arnold Scherer Fellowship designated for internationalstudents. Azmat also received the Kathryn SehyEndowed Fellowship designated for a doctoral studentin interfaith studies.Eun Ae Lee, Kyung-Taek Hong, and Na Young Ha are the 2012-13 E.Theodore and Mercia B. Bachmann Fellows. Ju Young Kim (not pictured)also received a Bachmann Fellowship.Niveen Sarras,(pictured here withthe son of a fellowdoctoral student),received the 2012-13Christian PalestineScholarship, theRalph W. Klein Ph.D.Fellowship in BiblicalStudies, and a DankerFellowship.Jennifer English,Jeffrey Schlesinger,and Jonathan Wilson(pictured) werethe first recipientsof the Luther andRuth SappenfieldFellowships designatedfor continuingeducation forparish pastors, forparish ministry inthe U.S. or missionworldwide.Jeff Fitzkappes and Bridget Illian are two of theVisionary Leaders Presidential Scholars in AdvancedStudies. Curtis Johnson also received a Presidentialscholarship.Carl-Eric Gentes (left) received a Visionary LeaderServant Scholarship and Matthew Frost received aVisionary Leader Presidential Scholarship.Yahu Vinayaraj, Mervin Boas, and Prince Vethamonickam Rajamonyreceived Visionary Leaders Hope Fellowships.Chingboi Guite is the first studentto receive the Fuerbringer BiblicalStudies Fellowship awarded inhonor of Alfred Fuerbringer,the late president of ConcordiaSeminary, St. Louis, Mo.Jonathan PimentelChacón is the firstrecipient of theEmmanuel MaywoodAdvanced StudiesFellowship. He has alsoreceived a HispanicTheological InitiativeConsortium fellowshipto continue his doctoralstudies.21Masresha Chufa, Sanchita Kisku, and Ayalew Mengesha are the LSTC/ELCA Global Mission Fellows for 2012-2013.
