Visionary Leaders ScholarshipsFirst awarded in 2011, Visionary Leaders Scholarships aremerit-based scholarships awarded to students whose giftsand goals make <strong>the</strong>m a particularly good m<strong>at</strong>ch for <strong>the</strong>type <strong>of</strong> ministry form<strong>at</strong>ion LSTC provides. Scholarships areawarded for tuition for a student’s three years <strong>of</strong> master <strong>of</strong>divinity coursework.Deans Scholarships provide one half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> tuition. Thisyear’s recipients are juniors Amy Loehndorf, Jade Gandrud, JosephYucha, and Sarah Bolick, pictured, along with juniors Cesar AbelArroyo Traverso and Aaron Shoppa and middlers Elizabeth Lowry andKa<strong>the</strong>rine Tuttle.Presidential Scholarships provide full tuition grants. 2012-2013recipients are Rachel Brocker (middler), Angela Storer (middler),Justin Tigerman (middler) and Marissa Tweed (junior).Servant Scholarships provide grants tocover one quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> tuition. AllisonBengfort (junior) and Marie Sager (middler),pictured, and Christopher Thomas, StephanieBerkas, and Megan Sawyer are <strong>the</strong> 2012-2013recipients.Hope Scholarships are based onneed or merit and awarded to students<strong>of</strong> color who will be <strong>the</strong> firstin <strong>the</strong>ir families to become a pastor.These awards may be used for tuitionor expenses. Willie Lee (junior), pictured,and Anthony Harper (junior),Annette Hernandez (junior) and RubyBurwell Lee (junior) received HopeScholarships this year.Advanced Studies fellowship recipientsTwenty-seven students in LSTC’s doctoral programsreceived fellowships totaling almost$62,000 for <strong>the</strong> 2012-2013 year. LSTC providedfinancial aid scholarships totaling over$146,000 for 34 students to support <strong>the</strong>ircoursework and continuing studies. Three intern<strong>at</strong>ionalstudents received ELCA Global Mission Partnership Fellowships for bothtuition and living expenses. Two students received fellowships through A Center<strong>of</strong> Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice. In addition to those noted below, IskandarBcheiry was <strong>the</strong> first recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Esperanza de Santa Maria Fellowship and Una Stroda received <strong>the</strong>Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Women’s Scholarship.“LSTC is gr<strong>at</strong>eful to <strong>the</strong> many generous people who have cre<strong>at</strong>ed fellowships and scholarshipsth<strong>at</strong> support <strong>the</strong> next gener<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologians and teachers studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>here</strong>. Through <strong>the</strong>ir generosity,we are able to provide assistance toalmost half <strong>of</strong> LSTC’s doctor <strong>of</strong> philosophystudents,” said Es<strong>the</strong>r Menn, director <strong>of</strong>Advanced Studies. “These awards mean somuch to students who are called to thisspecialized ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological educ<strong>at</strong>ion.Their ministry will prepare manyo<strong>the</strong>rs, around <strong>the</strong> world, to be visionaryleaders for <strong>the</strong> church.”Crystal Silva-McCormick and RichardFrontjes received <strong>the</strong> Robert MarshallSeo Young Lee, Mary Tororeiy, Chingboi Guite, and Emanuel Penumaka receivedWilliam J. and Elizabeth M. Danker Fellowships design<strong>at</strong>ed for intern<strong>at</strong>ional doctoralstudents, especially those studying World Christianity. O<strong>the</strong>r Danker Fellowsnot pictured are Niveen Sarras and Chakravarthy Zadda.Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Fellowship design<strong>at</strong>ed for NorthAmerican doctoral students.20
