He is rememberedfor his strong commitment to <strong>the</strong>unity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church and his workon <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>ement on <strong>the</strong> episcopacyfor The Lu<strong>the</strong>ran World Feder<strong>at</strong>ion.He had served as pastor <strong>at</strong> threecongreg<strong>at</strong>ions, Be<strong>the</strong>l Lu<strong>the</strong>ranChurch, University City, Mo.; SaintLuke Church, Chicago; and GraceLu<strong>the</strong>ran Church, Evanston, Ill.In addition to <strong>the</strong> M.Div. fromChrist Seminary-Seminex, Dr. Leeheld a master <strong>of</strong> sacred <strong>the</strong>ology, amaster <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology and a doctor <strong>of</strong>sacred <strong>the</strong>ology from LSTC. He returned to<strong>the</strong> parish after completing his coursework and has served several congreg<strong>at</strong>ionsin Wisconsin since 1994. Hecompleted <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. <strong>at</strong> LSTC in 1998,with a dissert<strong>at</strong>ion on <strong>the</strong> human rolein <strong>the</strong> Lord’s Supper.Todd Murken was a sailor, hiker,and kayaker whose love for <strong>the</strong> outdoorsled him to become an EagleScout and Troop Chaplain for manyyears. He was pastor <strong>of</strong> HoldenLu<strong>the</strong>ran Church, Mt. Morris andWild Rose, Wis., <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> hisde<strong>at</strong>h on July 7 from injuries sustainedin a bicycling accident.Pastor Murken was preceded inde<strong>at</strong>h by his fa<strong>the</strong>r, Byron. A funeralwas held July 11 <strong>at</strong> Grace Lu<strong>the</strong>ranChurch, Green Bay, Wis.Burnell James “Butch” Peterson1926–2012Augustana Class <strong>of</strong> 1952Pastor “Butch” Peterson was ordainedin 1952 after <strong>at</strong>tending bothAugustana Seminary and ChicagoLu<strong>the</strong>ran Theological Seminary(Maywood). He served as pastor<strong>of</strong> five congreg<strong>at</strong>ions in Colorado,IN MEMORIAMOhio, Texas, and New Mexico. Two<strong>of</strong> those congreg<strong>at</strong>ions were new missionchurches. He was known for hisinsightful sermons, good sense <strong>of</strong>humor, and beautiful tenor voice. Heis remembered as a true shepherd <strong>of</strong>his flock in each parish he served.Pastor Peterson died on August27, 2012, in Albuquerque, N.M. Heis survived by his wife <strong>of</strong> 62 years,Eileen; by <strong>the</strong>ir three children, ninegrandchildren and one gre<strong>at</strong>-grandchild.A memorial service was heldon September 1 <strong>at</strong> Manzano Del SolChapel, Albuquerque.James H. Schaefer1940–2012Class <strong>of</strong> 1967James Schaefer was ordained in1967 and served several parishes inLouisville, Ky., and Milwaukee, Wis.In Louisville, he was instrumental inestablishing a street ministry to servehomeless and disenfranchised teensand young adults suffering from substanceabuse.Pastor Schaefer received his J.D.from Marquette University Law<strong>School</strong> in 1970 and began workingas a public defender in <strong>the</strong> juvenilecourt system in Milwaukee. He spent10 years as an assistant district <strong>at</strong>torneyin <strong>the</strong> Milwaukee District, specializingin domestic violence cases.After reloc<strong>at</strong>ing to Eau Claire,Wis., he taught criminal justice <strong>at</strong>Fox Valley Technical College and <strong>at</strong>Chippewa Valley Technical College.In retirement, he continued to teachpart-time <strong>at</strong> Lakeland College andWisconsin Indianhead TechnicalCollege.In 1998, <strong>the</strong> Eau Claire PoliceDepartment asked him to cre<strong>at</strong>ea chaplaincy program for <strong>the</strong>Department. He was commissioned by<strong>the</strong> ELCA to fulfill this role and servedas head chaplain for nine years.Pastor Schaefer died on July 7,2012. He is survived by his wife,Carol, <strong>the</strong>ir two sons and two grandsons.A memorial service was heldJuly 16 <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Good Shepherd, Eau Claire, Wis.Vilis Varsbergs1929–2012Maywood Class <strong>of</strong> 1957As a boy, Pastor Varsbergs and hisfamily were forced to flee <strong>the</strong>ir n<strong>at</strong>iveL<strong>at</strong>via during World War II. His fa<strong>the</strong>rwas killed in Berlin during a U.S.bombing raid and <strong>the</strong> family fled to<strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es.Pastor Varsbergs studied inFremont, Neb., and Chicago. He wasordained in 1957 and served ZionL<strong>at</strong>vian Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church and St.Peter’s L<strong>at</strong>vian Church before becomingpresident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L<strong>at</strong>vian Lu<strong>the</strong>ranChurch in America. He l<strong>at</strong>er returnedto L<strong>at</strong>via to head <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology department<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> L<strong>at</strong>via.He was a lifelong supporterand served as a board member <strong>of</strong>Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Immigr<strong>at</strong>ion and RefugeeService.Pastor Varsbergs died on April 22,2012. He is survived by his wife,Biruta, two daughters and a son, andthree grandchildren. A funeral servicewas held <strong>at</strong> St. Peter’s L<strong>at</strong>vian Church,Wood Dale, Ill.29
