THE NATURE OF GOD AND CHRISTDoctrinal Study Paperthus becomes abundantly clear that the Messiah would be a son of David after the flesh, but Hewould also be the Son of God who dies for the sins of the world and is raised to sit on His throneand is now seated on the right hand of the Father in heaven.God’s Purpose for Creating HumankindAny study of the nature of God that does not examine the purpose of the life, death andresurrection of Jesus Christ as it relates to God’s great purpose for humanity, would be woefullyinadequate. God created humans in His image with regard to form and shape (Genesis 1:26-27).In John’s vision of Jesus Christ in Revelation 1:13-18, the resurrected Christ is described ashaving human features. The apostle John writes, “Beloved, now we are children of God; and ithas not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall belike Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2). Furthermore, John states in Revelation22:3-4, “And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it,and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on theirforeheads.” Thus to deny that God and the Lamb have form and human features is to deny theinspired words of God.Even though humans were created in the image of God, they are not of the same essenceas God. Adam was created from the dust of the earth. In Genesis 2:7 we read that after he wascreated in the image of God in the sense of form, God breathed into him the breath of life and hebecame a living soul (Hebrew, nephesh). It should be noted that God breathed into Adam thebreath of life. He did not breathe into Adam any spiritual essence, but rather man became aliving soul, nephesh—breathing creature. 39The Hebrew word nephesh simply means life and/or life potential. Animals were alsogiven life or soul as clearly revealed in Genesis 1:20, “Then God said, ‘Let the waters aboundwith an abundance of living creatures [nephesh], and let birds fly above the earth across the faceof the firmament of the heavens.” The Hebrew word nephesh is translated as “life” in severalplaces in the Old Testament. Thus it is clear that nephesh refers to life. This is why Jesusinstructs us not to fear man who can kill the body but not the soul (life potential), but rather fearHim who is able to destroy both body and soul in hellfire (Matthew 10:28). God is the one whois the ultimate judge as to whether one lives or dies the second death (from which there is noresurrection). The life that God breathed into Adam’s nostrils imparted to him a “physio-chemical”state of existence. In short, it was physical life. This is evidenced by the fact that Godcommanded Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, “for in theday that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). This instruction to Adam and Evecontains two critically important points: 1) humankind must look to God for the knowledge ofgood and evil, and 2) disobedience leads to death.Adam and Eve rejected God’s instructions and ate of the tree of the knowledge of goodand evil. They chose to believe Satan’s great lie, i.e., “you will not surely die” (Genesis 3:4-5).39 New Strong’s Dictionary of Hebrew and Greek Words.Page 33September 2005© 2005 United Church of God, an International Association
