THE NATURE OF GOD AND CHRISTDoctrinal Study PaperHe shows that it is a mistake to read Talmudic writings backward as being representative <strong>of</strong> theJewish belief <strong>and</strong> practices <strong>of</strong> the first century, just as it is wrong to read the “<strong>Christ</strong>ian” concepts<strong>of</strong> the fourth century backwards as being the representative thought <strong>of</strong> first-century <strong>Christ</strong>ianity.Here are quotes from his book:<strong>The</strong> temptation to use such terms as “Judaism” <strong>and</strong> “<strong>Christ</strong>ianity” primarily in connectionwith what has survived in one’s own tradition as “Judaism” or “<strong>Christ</strong>ianity” isunderst<strong>and</strong>able. It is also extremely misleading. That which resulted when a certain type<strong>of</strong> <strong>Christ</strong>ianity achieved <strong>of</strong>ficial status in the Roman Empire <strong>of</strong> the fourth century, <strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong>ardized for itself certain doctrinal <strong>and</strong> liturgical norms, should not be used to judgethe earlier centuries, according to what I would like to believe is sound historicalmethodology. Similarly, the fact that after the Jewish revolts against Rome in 66-73 <strong>and</strong>again in 132-35, Judaism comes to mean primarily that torah (law)-oriented type <strong>of</strong>Rabbi-led Pharisaism which compiled <strong>and</strong> transmitted the Talmud <strong>and</strong> related Semiticliterature (henceforth called ‘rabbinic’ Judaism), should not blind us to the complexities<strong>of</strong> the earlier situation. For <strong>Christ</strong>ianity, the reign <strong>of</strong> Constantine became a major turningpoint;for Judaism, the catastrophes <strong>of</strong> 66-73 <strong>and</strong> 132-135 were equally pivotal. We mustbe careful in any attempt to move behind these major developments that we do notsimply read later <strong>Christ</strong>ian <strong>and</strong> Jewish history back into the earlier periods. 6161 Robert A.
