Re-structuring Manali 465 Urban Place-MakingThe vision for Manali town incorporates the need to promote conviviality in cityspaces as areas of collective participation, engagement and exchange. Urban placeswithin the city allow for greater degree of vibrancy, identity and association of itscitizens and visitors with the town itself. Presently the city's lack of memorableidentity is compounded not only by recent additions of faceless architecture butalso in the lack of imageable and functional urban nodes. Apart from the linearspace of the pedestrianized mall itself, Ram Bagh chowk and Hadimba temple zone,the idea of popular collective destinations within the inner town core isunfortunately not present.Civic NodesThe proposed structure plan for Manali town envisions the creation of ten nodeswithin the central area of the town and along the fringes, as new catalysts forrestructuring the existing urban fabric as well as infusing new life and vitality intoManali. Each of these ten nodes are proposed to play pivotal roles in not onlyreducing the present anonymity of the city experience but also as focal points fordiverse functions, city-level magnets, imageable and iconic buildings allcontributing to a renewed sense of place and legibility for the town.(For proposedfunctional content of some of the nodes, please refer Annexure 3)Proposed nodes are distributed along the main movement spines of the town onboth Left and Right Banks, offering a sequential assembly of experiential pocketswhile traversing the length and breadth of the town area and immediate vicinity.These nodes in order of entry to Manali town are:1 City Entry Node at Green Tax Barrier2 New Bus Terminal and Science Park3 Civic Square at Old Aloo Ground4 City Plaza at Old Bus Stand5 Ram Bagh Chowk6 City Eco- Park7 Heritage Square8 Club-house Node9 The Museum Node (Left Bank )10 Institutional Center (Left Bank)
