On behalf of <strong>FISITA</strong>'s member societies and<br />

companies in 38 countries, it is my pleasure to<br />

invite you to join us for the <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> <strong>World</strong><br />

<strong>Automotive</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> in Budapest.<br />

As we approach our 33rd biennial <strong>World</strong><br />

<strong>Congress</strong>, the automotive industry is having to<br />

reinvent itself in order to meet the challenges<br />

of a dramatically changing global automotive<br />

landscape. Consumer demands and new<br />

regulations are influencing the development<br />

and marketability of innovations throughout the<br />

<strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> Chairman, Mr. Andor Paizer<br />

GTE and the organising team in Hungary<br />

would like to extend our warm welcome to<br />

this <strong>Preliminary</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> for <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong><br />

in Budapest.<br />

Budapest last hosted the <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>Congress</strong><br />

in 1978 and it is both an honour and a<br />

challenge for us to do so again now at this<br />

time of unprecedented change throughout<br />

our industry. The automotive business is of<br />

major importance to Hungary, in terms of our<br />

economy and also our higher education sector.<br />

which is leading to major changes in new and<br />

existing powertrain technologies. However<br />

important considerations with many exciting<br />

more than half of the population now lives<br />

within cities, presenting enormous challenges<br />

and opportunities which call for radical new<br />

vehicle and mobility concepts. The technology<br />

and policy approaches needed to meet these<br />

challenges will differ significantly between<br />

developed and emerging markets.<br />

For <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong>, we have once again<br />

assembled the world's top experts to help<br />

us understand how technology, customers,<br />

governments and structural changes will<br />

shape our profession, as well as our industry,<br />

For this reason we have been able to count on<br />

the backing of our government as well as our<br />

leading automotive manufacturers to bring the<br />

<strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> back to Budapest.<br />

In addition, despite the difficult economic<br />

circumstances of the past year, we have<br />

received the help and strong support of<br />

engineers, national societies, automotive<br />

companies and universities all over the world.<br />

More than 700 abstracts were submitted which<br />

is a testament to the strength of the worldwide<br />

<strong>FISITA</strong> community. From these excellent<br />

materials, our team has worked hard to create<br />

a congress programme which will help us all in<br />

our professional development, as well as in our<br />

day-to-day jobs.<br />

In particular, <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> will tackle some of<br />

the key questions in areas such as: the further<br />

development of internal combustion engines<br />

to achieve better energy efficiency and lower<br />

over the crucial next decade. The beautiful<br />

city of Budapest, situated at the centre of<br />

Europe, close to some of the fastest growing<br />

automotive economies, is an ideal location from<br />

which to plan our future direction.<br />

I am confident that <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> will be one of<br />

the year's most important gatherings for all<br />

of us involved in the drive to achieve cleaner,<br />

safer, low-carbon road transportation. I<br />

the Vehicle Division of the Hungarian Scientific Society of Mechanical<br />

Engineering - Gépipari Tudományos Egyesület (GTE).<br />

Founded in 1949, GTE is a non-profit making professional scientific<br />

society. It's professional activities are carried out by divisions organised<br />

according to special technical fields, of which the Vehicle Division is<br />

one. The society promotes free exchange of views among professionals<br />

and disseminates the latest developments by organising professional<br />

meetings, discussions and vocational training courses. GTE also offers<br />

technical expert services and represents the interests of its members to<br />

Due to the high number of excellent abstracts submitted, and taking<br />

into account the maximum number of technical sessions available in the<br />

programme, it has not been possible to schedule all papers for<br />

oral presentation.<br />

The poster session is a valuable way for authors to present papers and<br />

meet with interested delegates for in-depth technical discussions. To<br />

facilitate the maximum opportunity for this exchange the organisers have<br />

defined special slots within a limited number of Technical Sessions for<br />

authors whose papers have been selected for Poster Presentations to give<br />

delegates a ‘taster’ of the content of their posters. We have called these<br />

slots Posters with Brief Oral Introduction (PBOI).<br />

Half hour blocks for PBOIs have been included at the end of the relevant<br />

Technical Sessions, when 6 PBOIs will be presented continuously. Poster<br />

authors will be available for discussion at the refreshment breaks and<br />

lunch break immediately following their PBOI presentations.

Vehicle Electrification<br />

Given the challenges of petroleum dependency and atmospheric greenhouse gas, there has been a rapid increase in a broad spectrum of approaches<br />

toward electrifying vehicle propulsion systems. Systems ranging from simple start-stop to mild and strong hybrids, to range extended electrics, to full<br />

battery electrics, and even to fuel cell electrics are rapidly appearing in almost every OEM’s current and future vehicle portfolio.<br />

While the technical challenges alone are significant, there are also questions regarding supply base development, electrical grid capability, government<br />

incentives for development and facilitization, customer acceptance, recycling, and many others. This plenary session will provide perspectives on these<br />

emerging systems, the principle components and their developmental challenges, and how we will see this most significant transformation in vehicle<br />

propulsion evolving over the next few years. Panelist presentations will include new systems being readied for the marketplace. The importance of<br />

collaboration between OEM’s and suppliers, academia, and governments will be discussed in the following panel discussion.<br />

The seminar will provide an opportunity for engineering educators to gain<br />

fresh insights into the current and future needs of industry with regard to<br />

technology and wider competencies, helping them to ensure the relevance<br />

of their courses and the employability of their graduates. This unique<br />

meeting will also be a chance for educators and industry employers to<br />

make connections and discuss common problems and challenges around<br />

the need for innovation in automotive engineering education. The current<br />

global economic crisis should be looked upon as an opportunity for<br />

universities and business to work more closely to increase cooperation<br />

The Connected Vehicle - When will it be here?<br />

This session will discuss the requirements and opportunities presented by the “connected vehicle” - one which has data and communication links to the outside<br />

world. Cooperative systems utilize Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communications to enable features which improve safety, fuel economy and<br />

transport efficiency for the benefit of drivers and society. Furthermore, with most of the major manufacturers bringing plug in electric vehicles to market in the<br />

coming years, cooperative systems can play a crucial role in aiding customer acceptance by helping to improve driver behavior and increase battery life through<br />

critical monitoring and driver feedback systems.<br />

This session will discuss the action needed on the part of automakers, telematics providers and road operators in order to take the connected vehicle out of the<br />

research world and onto our roads, including:<br />

• What applications will be required and what applications can be enabled through such a communications pathway?<br />

• What role will the auto makers and the road operators play in defining and deploying communications infrastructure?<br />

• What communications pathways will be needed (GSM, WiFi, WiMax, DSRC, smart-gird, etc . . . )?<br />

• What feedback do drivers need in order to improve and modify their behavior?<br />

• What standards and communications protocols will be required to enable reliable, secure and anonymous data communications on such a large scale?<br />

The Kecskemét plant started its licence-based production in 1969 but now belongs to the Knorr-Bremse<br />

multinational company to establish a development center in Budapest. R&D was established at the Knorr-<br />

Bremse plant in Kecskemét mainly for pneumatic chassis control and as technical support for production. In<br />

Visteon Hungary Manufacturing and Trading Ltd was founded in 1990 as a company full owned by Visteon<br />

Magyar Suzuki Corporation - Esztergom<br />

The company was established by its major shareholder Suzuki Motor Corporation in 1991. The kick-off<br />

model, Swift, rolled off the production line in 1992, followed in 2000 by Wagon R+, Ignis in 2003, the new<br />

Swift in 2005, SX4 in 2006 and Splash in 2008. By now over a million and a half Suzuki vehicles - assembled<br />

in the Esztergom factory - are used on domestic and European roads. Apart from the emphasis it places<br />

on quality, Magyar Suzuki aspires to an environmentally conscious mode of operation. All models currently<br />

assembled at Esztergom are built with engines complying with Euro 4 environmental standards. MSC has<br />

Audi Hungary Motor Ltd - Györ<br />

Audi Hungary Motor Kft was founded in Györ in 1993. Production started in 1994 building 4 cylinder petrol<br />

engines. In 1996 AUDI AG decided to move to 6- and 8-cylinder engine production, and assembly of TT<br />

Coupé and TT Roadster vehicles. In 1999 it started the project for development to support series engine<br />

production. Nowadays the factory produces diesel and petrol engines in R4, V6 and V8 form and as top<br />

model V10 petrol engines. The capacity is about 6900 engines and 300 cars per day.<br />

After a light lunch the tour will continue with a visit to the Monastery of Pannonhalma, a thousand-year-old<br />

abbey, which has been a world heritage site since 1996. The history of the Benedictine abbey goes<br />

back to the early years of the Hungarian State. The first monks were invited here by Prince Géza in 996<br />

and the first stone church was built in 1107. The earliest details of the existing basilica date from 1225.<br />

Collections open to the public include the library, picture-gallery, treasury, the private collection of the<br />

church, the archaeological and numismatic collection. After visiting the Abbey dinner will be provided in<br />

a local restaurant.<br />

NABI Ltd - Kaposvár<br />

The Kaposvár facility of NABI Nord American Bus Industries Co is one of the Hungarian plants of this<br />

company which builds buses mainly for the US market. The Kaposvár plant builds bus bodies 45 feet in<br />

length, using composite technology which means the bus does not have any metal frame or chassis. The<br />

two main elements, the lower body and the upper body are fibre forced polyester structures formed in<br />

special vacuum technology.<br />

Production started in 2002 and NABI produces about 500 buses with different drivelines, mainly equipped<br />

with CNG engines. Their reduced weight makes them very popular compared to similar sized steel body<br />

structure buses. They are easy to maintain with zero corrosion.<br />

After a light lunch the tour will continue to Lake Balaton, one of the most precious natural treasures of<br />

Hungary. It is the largest lake of Central Europe, 77 kilometers in length and varying in width from 4 to<br />

14 kilometers. The tour will cross the Balaton by boat and will continue with a visit to Tihany. The church<br />

and the monastery of the Abbey are the two most famous sights of Tihany. Dinner will be provided in a<br />

local restaurant.<br />

Magyar Suzuki Corporation - Esztergom City Visit<br />

This tour combines a visit to the Magyar Suzuki Corporation (see T5 opposite for details) with a visit to the<br />

historic city of Esztergom and includes a light lunch.<br />

This city was the place of birth and coronation for King István, the founder of the Christian State, and the<br />

Royal capital until the 13th century. Its church is the country’s largest, while the Mária Valéria Bridge - which<br />

crosses the river to Slovakia - was reopened just a few years ago after having been destroyed in <strong>World</strong> War<br />

II. The Basilica is noteworthy for its remarkable altarpiece depicting the Assumption, which is the largest<br />

single-canvas oil-painted altarpiece in the world. After visiting the city, dinner will be at the Renaissance<br />

restaurant in Visegrád, which was the capital of Hungary in the 14-15th centuries.<br />

Welcome to Budapest<br />

The capital city of Hungary, Budapest, was created out of the<br />

unification of the separate historic towns of Buda, Pest and Óbuda<br />

in 1873. Although the area had been inhabited from early times,<br />

it was from this date that the city’s expansion into a world capital<br />

really began. Budapest is bisected by the River Danube, with the<br />

city as much a natural geographical centre as it is the country’s<br />

transport hub. Covering an area of two hundred square miles<br />

and divided into 23 administrative districts, it is home today to<br />

a population of 2 million people.<br />

Budapest owes everything to the mighty River Danube which<br />

flows north to south through the centre of the city, simultaneously<br />

dividing and linking Pest in the east from the wooded hills of<br />

Buda on the western side. This majestic river has been the focus<br />

of Budapest’s rich and fascinating history and vibrant cultural<br />

heritage throughout the centuries since the Celts first settled<br />

at Gellért Hill in the third and fourth centuries B.C. The city is<br />

rightly known as the Queen of the Danube. It has also been<br />

called the City of Spas, as there are a dozen thermal baths<br />

complexes served by over a hundred natural thermal springs.<br />

Budapest is not an out-of-the way little town waiting to be<br />

discovered, it reveals itself right from the start. It is a city that<br />

has always attached great importance to its appearance, so that<br />

it would appear hospitable and friendly at first sight. In a single<br />

glimpse the visitor can take in the <strong>World</strong> Heritage panorama with<br />

the Parliament, the imposing Royal Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion,<br />

the impressive Danube Embankment in the heart of the city and<br />

some of the nine bridges spanning the Danube.<br />

On Monday morning, when people go to work, the city shows<br />

its other face. While the tourists set out to explore Buda, Pest is<br />

pulling up its shutters and the pedestrian streets are beginning<br />

to bustle with life again. Spending time in Budapest affords a<br />

real journey through time. In some areas, a stroll of merely half<br />

a kilometre is all that is needed to reveal a dazzling architectural<br />

feat of glass-metal-halogen in contrast to the astonishing sight<br />

moments before of a Roman monument dating back over a<br />

thousand years. Whatever your favourite era or architectural<br />

style, you are certain to find a masterpiece of it in Budapest.<br />

Naturally, the history and the beauty of the city is not all. The<br />

people living here create the soul of the city and they have<br />

contributed to its vitality throughout the centuries. Whether sitting<br />

in a quiet café over a pastry or admiring one of the performances<br />

in the Opera House or perhaps relaxing in one of the numerous<br />

ancient thermal baths, it is easy for one to observe how<br />

This organ concert has been arranged exclusively for participants of the<br />

congress at St. Stephen’s Basilica in the city centre. The Basilica is one of<br />

Hungary`s most beautiful and most significant churches. It was named after<br />

the first King of Hungary whose incorruptible right hand is housed in the<br />

reliquary. The neoclassical building at 96 metres high is one of the tallest<br />

in Budapest and its southern tower accommodates Hungary`s biggest bell<br />

weighing over 9 tonnes.<br />

Gala Dinner<br />

The official gala dinner of <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> will be held at the Museum of Fine<br />

Arts. The millenary session of the Hungarian Parliament in 1896 passed<br />

a law whereby art collections previously held in different institutions were<br />

to brought together and placed in the newly-established Museum of<br />

Fine Arts. The Museum opened in 1906 and its collection is made up of<br />

international art including all periods of European art, and comprises<br />

more than 100,000 pieces.<br />

The <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> Exhibition is a showcase for companies offering<br />

solutions in every aspect of automotive research, design,<br />

development and production. Attendees can visit the exhibition<br />

throughout the congress to gain hands-on experience of the<br />

latest technologies, products and services on display from leading<br />

automotive companies from all over the world.<br />

The exhibition offers a great opportunity to network with potential<br />

customers, suppliers and fellow engineers. Coffee breaks will<br />

take place in the beverage zone in the exhibition area and lunch<br />

will be served next door. Daily podium performances will be<br />

staged in the exhibition hall in the coffee breaks and at lunchtime.<br />

A free WiFi zone is available in the exhibition hall and you can<br />

sit down and relax in the Internet Café. In the outdoor area next<br />

to the exhibition hall cars, buses, commercial vehicles will be<br />

on display. To ensure wider publicity, the exhibition will be also<br />

opened for invited visitors. Open days will be on 1 - 2 June,<br />

Budapest Airport Minibus (www.airportshuttle.hu) will offer special<br />

discounted prices for <strong>FISITA</strong> delegates arriving at either terminals<br />

(Ferihegy 1, 2A or 2B) of Budapest International Airport. The bus will<br />

take you to any address in Budapest for a fee of 2700 HUF/person (cca<br />

9 EUR). Return ticket costs 4500 HUF (cca 15 EUR). Please indicate your<br />

arrival time during the online registration. Look for the <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>2010</strong> logo<br />

Entry into Hungary<br />

Foreign visitors must have a valid passport (most EU citizens can use<br />

their national identity card).<br />

For visits shorter than a month, visas are not required for citizens of<br />

most European countries, the United States, Japan and Israel. Visas<br />

are required for visitors from most Asian countries, and most states<br />

of NIS (please see http://hungary.visahq.com/ and<br />

The unit of currency is Hungarian Forint (HUF).<br />

Tax<br />

VAT is currently 25% (18% for hotels and some food).<br />

Tipping<br />

Tipping is part of the culture in Hungary and is the norm at most places.<br />

Unless you are particularly discontent with the service it is customary to<br />

tip approximately 10% of the total bill in restaurants. The way to tip in<br />

Hungary differs from other countries: when you get the bill, add on how<br />

much you want to tip for the service, and ask the waiter to charge you<br />

the total amount. A tip of approx. 10% of the cost of the journey would<br />

be expected when travelling by taxi.<br />

Telephone<br />

The international code for Hungary is 36 and the area code for Budapest<br />

is 1. To call a number within Hungary, first dial 06. Budapest telephone<br />

numbers comprise seven digits, all other areas’ have six digits (excluding<br />

the area code in both cases).<br />

To call a (Hungarian) mobile telephone, first dial 06, followed by the<br />

subscriber’s seven-digit number starting with either 20-, 30- or 70-.<br />

To make an international call from Hungary, first dial 00, then the country<br />

code followed by the area code and the subscriber’s telephone number.<br />

Climate<br />

The weather in May is usually sunny and warm with temperatures from<br />

20-25C during the day.<br />

Language<br />

The official language of Hungary is Hungarian; however, German and<br />

English are widely understood. The official language of the <strong>Congress</strong> is<br />

English; please note that translation facilities will not be provided.<br />

The organisers cannot accept liability for any personal accidents, loss<br />

of belongings or damage to private property of congress delegates<br />

Participants will receive confirmation of their registration and hotel<br />

reservations, and may also check their payment and reservation status<br />

by logging into their account in the registration database.<br />

Methods of Payment<br />

Payment must be made in full by bank transfer (including all bank<br />

charges) or by major credit cards (American Express, Visa, MasterCard).<br />

Registrations and hotel reservations will be acknowledged in writing.<br />

Registrations and hotel reservations which are not accompanied by<br />

payment will not be accepted. Official invoices and receipts for fees paid<br />

by the participants will be provided at on-site registration. Any financial<br />

queries should be addressed directly to Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd. On site<br />

registration fees, hotel charges and optional programmes can be paid in<br />

cash in convertible currency, Hungarian Forint or by credit card. Please<br />

Cancellation Policy<br />

Cancellations must be made in writing to Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd.<br />

Cancellations received before 31 March <strong>2010</strong> will be refunded 100%.<br />

From 1 April to 15 May <strong>2010</strong>, the penalty is 50%. No refund is possible<br />

for cancellations submitted after 15 May <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Cancellation of hotel reservations received before 31 March <strong>2010</strong> will be<br />

refunded 100%. After that date prepaid hotel deposits are not refundable.<br />

Cancellation of optional tours can be made until 15 May <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

A bus tour starting on the Buda side of the city visiting famous sights<br />

including Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, Gellért Hill, Citadel and the<br />

Labyrinth. After the Buda side the Pest side will be explored including<br />

Heroes’ Square, Basilica, Opera House etc. Lunch is not included in the tour.<br />

C2 Eger wine tour<br />

Eger is one of the oldest towns in Hungary with a rich historical past and<br />

numerous monuments. St. Stephen, the first Hungarian King, founded an<br />

Archbishopric there.<br />

The fortress, which was constructed in the 13th century, played a great role<br />

in the fight against the Turks in the 16th century. Surrounding Eger are some<br />

of the most famous vineyards in Europe, producing world-renowned brands<br />

such as the ‘Leányka’ and ‘Bull’s Blood.’ Wine-tasting and lunch in a local<br />

restaurant is included.<br />

C3 Szentendre sightseeing<br />

Szentendre, the most picturesque little town along the Hungarian stretch of<br />

the Danube, and home to sculptors and painters, is not likely to be forgotten.<br />

The town is a charming monument to the XVIIIth century, with its undulating<br />

cobbled streets and unexpected alleyways, and exudes something of a<br />

Mediterranean atmosphere due to the Serbs, Dalmatians and Greeks who<br />

settled there from the XIVth century onwards.<br />

After a guided tour in the town, you will visit the Kovács Margit Ceramic<br />

Museum, an unique place that exhibits the work of a very special Hungarian<br />

artist, who created her own style by combining modern art forms with the<br />

traditions of Hungarian folk art. You will also visit Hungary’s biggest outdoor<br />

Ethnographic Museum (Skanzen). The architecture of almost every region of<br />

the country is represented in this collection of more than 300 buildings.<br />

Students and Young Engineers are invited to participate in the special programmes offered alongside the 33rd <strong>World</strong> <strong>Congress</strong>:<br />

The <strong>FISITA</strong> Travelling Fellowship <strong>Programme</strong> begins the week before<br />

the main <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> starts. The programme enables 20 outstanding<br />

young automotive engineers, under the age of 35, to take part in a<br />

special week long series of industry visits in Hungary, before attending<br />

the <strong>World</strong> <strong>Automotive</strong> <strong>Congress</strong>.<br />

The programme will include visits to Audi Hungaria Motor Ltd,<br />

Knorr-Bremse, Hungarian Suzuki Corporation and Nabi Limited. A<br />

number of cultural and recreational tours around Hungary will also<br />

be included. This is a wonderful opportunity for young engineers to<br />

make connections with their peers from around the world.<br />

The Travelling Fellowship registration fee is 600 EUR (OECD), 480<br />

EUR (non-OECD) including Student <strong>Congress</strong> participation. Travel<br />

(to Budapest and back) and accommodation costs are sponsored<br />

at the Student <strong>Congress</strong> which runs alongside the main <strong>FISITA</strong> <strong>Congress</strong>.<br />

Authors can submit papers on any of the main congress topics as<br />

listed above. All papers presented will be published on the <strong>Congress</strong><br />

Proceedings CD ROM.<br />

As well as making contacts with other students from around the world,<br />

students will also have the opportunity to attend the main congress and<br />

network with senior engineers and industry figures.<br />

The Student <strong>Congress</strong> registration fee is 250 EUR. Travel costs are to<br />

be covered by the participant or the national <strong>FISITA</strong> member society.<br />

Participation is limited to full-time students (both undergraduate and<br />

postgraduate).<br />

The deposit amount must be paid to the bank account of Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd. by 31 March <strong>2010</strong> and will be later deducted from your bill by the hotel. In case<br />

of credit card payment, you agree that Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd. is entitled to forward the credit card information to the hotel, but ONLY in case of no show. Hotel<br />

bookings that are not guaranteed by credit card or deposit payment by 31 March, will be cancelled automatically by Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd.<br />

Cancellations must be made in writing to Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd. Cancellations received before 31 March, <strong>2010</strong> will be refunded 100%. After 31 March, <strong>2010</strong>, or<br />

in case of no show or lost room nights due to later arrival and earlier departure, the hotel is entitled to charge the cancellation fee which can amount up to 90%<br />

of the accommodation costs. For total cancellation after 31 March, <strong>2010</strong>, Diamond <strong>Congress</strong> Ltd. will charge a minimum 2 nights deposit. With your booking you<br />
