Technology that separates
car from carbon.
* Based on UK market data; tested against ordinary fuels in a range of vehicles
In partnership with OEMs, we are developing
technology to improve engine and energy efficiency.
For example, BP Ultimate Unleaded can help drivers
go an average 20 km further per tank, while BP
Ultimate Diesel can reduce hydrocarbon emissions
by an average of 35% *. Castrol’s ultra low viscosity
lubricants, in combination with next generation
engines, help deliver an average fuel saving of 8%
versus current engines. And we’ve also joined with
DuPont to develop biobutanol as an advanced
biofuel of the future. Learn more at bp.com
Welcome Message
FISITA President, Dipl. Ing. Christoph Huss
On behalf of FISITA's member societies and
companies in 38 countries, it is my pleasure to
invite you to join us for the FISITA 2010 World
Automotive Congress in Budapest.
As we approach our 33rd biennial World
Congress, the automotive industry is having to
reinvent itself in order to meet the challenges
of a dramatically changing global automotive
landscape. Consumer demands and new
regulations are influencing the development
and marketability of innovations throughout the
FISITA 2010 Congress Chairman, Mr. Andor Paizer
GTE and the organising team in Hungary
would like to extend our warm welcome to
this Preliminary Programme for FISITA 2010
in Budapest.
Budapest last hosted the FISITA Congress
in 1978 and it is both an honour and a
challenge for us to do so again now at this
time of unprecedented change throughout
our industry. The automotive business is of
major importance to Hungary, in terms of our
economy and also our higher education sector.
vehicle, to a greater degree than ever before.
First among these demands is fuel efficiency,
which is leading to major changes in new and
existing powertrain technologies. However
safety and traffic management also remain
important considerations with many exciting
new developments on the horizon.
At the same time, we live in world in which
more than half of the population now lives
within cities, presenting enormous challenges
and opportunities which call for radical new
vehicle and mobility concepts. The technology
and policy approaches needed to meet these
challenges will differ significantly between
developed and emerging markets.
For FISITA 2010, we have once again
assembled the world's top experts to help
us understand how technology, customers,
governments and structural changes will
shape our profession, as well as our industry,
For this reason we have been able to count on
the backing of our government as well as our
leading automotive manufacturers to bring the
FISITA Congress back to Budapest.
In addition, despite the difficult economic
circumstances of the past year, we have
received the help and strong support of
engineers, national societies, automotive
companies and universities all over the world.
More than 700 abstracts were submitted which
is a testament to the strength of the worldwide
FISITA community. From these excellent
materials, our team has worked hard to create
a congress programme which will help us all in
our professional development, as well as in our
day-to-day jobs.
In particular, FISITA 2010 will tackle some of
the key questions in areas such as: the further
development of internal combustion engines
to achieve better energy efficiency and lower
5
over the crucial next decade. The beautiful
city of Budapest, situated at the centre of
Europe, close to some of the fastest growing
automotive economies, is an ideal location from
which to plan our future direction.
I am confident that FISITA 2010 will be one of
the year's most important gatherings for all
of us involved in the drive to achieve cleaner,
safer, low-carbon road transportation. I
encourage you to join us in Budapest and help
advance automobiles and sustainable mobility.
Dipl. Ing Christoph Huss
emissions; alternative powertrain solutions;
the application of the latest engineering
methods in development and testing;
vehicle safety; intelligent vehicle and traffic
management; special new developments
relating to buses and coaches and questions
of regulation and homologation.
Please join us in Budapest in 2010 for an
exciting World Automotive Congress together
with some traditional Hungarian hospitality.
ZF technology – the intelligent choice.
Because our innovations set standards
that are designed to pay off.
New developments such as an
8-speed automatic transmission,
a dual clutch transmission,
hybrid systems and hybrid
modules significantly reduce
fuel consumption and therefore
also CO 2 emissions.
For our engineers, reducing fuel consumption and emissions does not necessarily mean
compromising on driving dynamics, safety or comfort. That’s just another reason why
ZF has been a force for innovation and a dependable partner for the automotive industry
worldwide for decades now.
Posters with Brief Oral Introduction (PBOI)
Due to the high number of excellent abstracts submitted, and taking
into account the maximum number of technical sessions available in the
programme, it has not been possible to schedule all papers for
oral presentation.
The poster session is a valuable way for authors to present papers and
meet with interested delegates for in-depth technical discussions. To
facilitate the maximum opportunity for this exchange the organisers have
defined special slots within a limited number of Technical Sessions for
authors whose papers have been selected for Poster Presentations to give
delegates a ‘taster’ of the content of their posters. We have called these
slots Posters with Brief Oral Introduction (PBOI).
Half hour blocks for PBOIs have been included at the end of the relevant
Technical Sessions, when 6 PBOIs will be presented continuously. Poster
authors will be available for discussion at the refreshment breaks and
lunch break immediately following their PBOI presentations.

Technical Programme - Tuesday, 1 June 2010
Plenary Sessions 11:00 - 12:30
Vehicle Electrification
Given the challenges of petroleum dependency and atmospheric greenhouse gas, there has been a rapid increase in a broad spectrum of approaches
toward electrifying vehicle propulsion systems. Systems ranging from simple start-stop to mild and strong hybrids, to range extended electrics, to full
battery electrics, and even to fuel cell electrics are rapidly appearing in almost every OEM’s current and future vehicle portfolio.
While the technical challenges alone are significant, there are also questions regarding supply base development, electrical grid capability, government
incentives for development and facilitization, customer acceptance, recycling, and many others. This plenary session will provide perspectives on these
emerging systems, the principle components and their developmental challenges, and how we will see this most significant transformation in vehicle
propulsion evolving over the next few years. Panelist presentations will include new systems being readied for the marketplace. The importance of
collaboration between OEM’s and suppliers, academia, and governments will be discussed in the following panel discussion.
Chair
Daniel M Hancock,
GM Powertrain
Commercial Vehicles
This session concentrates on several issues facing future commercial vehicle design. Road transportation will play as an important role in the future as it
does today, thus the main characteristics of commercial vehicles must be kept as close as possible to those of passenger cars. This means that the driving
dynamics, traffic safety, the environmental impact of the heavy vehicle must be further improved. The contributions in this session will address the special
problems of passive/active safety, powertrain and the engine from the leading experts in this field.
FISITA Educators Seminar 16:30 - 19:00
The Education of Automotive Engineers
to meet the Demands of the 21st Century.
The seminar will provide an opportunity for engineering educators to gain
fresh insights into the current and future needs of industry with regard to
technology and wider competencies, helping them to ensure the relevance
of their courses and the employability of their graduates. This unique
meeting will also be a chance for educators and industry employers to
make connections and discuss common problems and challenges around
the need for innovation in automotive engineering education. The current
global economic crisis should be looked upon as an opportunity for
universities and business to work more closely to increase cooperation
while accommodating the core missions, values and needs of both.
The seminar will be offered as a free benefit to Congress delegates.
A detailed programme will be available on the
FISITA website (http://www.fisita.com/education/educators)
Plenary Sessions 11:00 - 12:30
The Connected Vehicle - When will it be here?
This session will discuss the requirements and opportunities presented by the “connected vehicle” - one which has data and communication links to the outside
world. Cooperative systems utilize Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communications to enable features which improve safety, fuel economy and
transport efficiency for the benefit of drivers and society. Furthermore, with most of the major manufacturers bringing plug in electric vehicles to market in the
coming years, cooperative systems can play a crucial role in aiding customer acceptance by helping to improve driver behavior and increase battery life through
critical monitoring and driver feedback systems.
This session will discuss the action needed on the part of automakers, telematics providers and road operators in order to take the connected vehicle out of the
research world and onto our roads, including:
• What applications will be required and what applications can be enabled through such a communications pathway?
• What role will the auto makers and the road operators play in defining and deploying communications infrastructure?
• What communications pathways will be needed (GSM, WiFi, WiMax, DSRC, smart-gird, etc . . . )?
• What feedback do drivers need in order to improve and modify their behavior?
• What standards and communications protocols will be required to enable reliable, secure and anonymous data communications on such a large scale?
Being an intensely market-oriented sector, the automotive industry is highly exposed to the effect of economic changes. The different rate of progress in
the various economic regions and countries, the advancement of the global economy - or for that matter, its crisis - as well as the demand for sustainable
development are all factors that shape this industry. These factors leave their mark on the various economic regions to different degrees and result in diverging
patterns in automotive development despite the general trend of globalisation. The mission of this session is to analyse those actual and anticipated changes that
emerge in the automotive and supply industry in response to the economic crisis and the diverging development paths of regional markets. The session will pay
special attention to the Chinese automotive industry, as it is one of the world’s most dynamically progressing automotive sectors and the FISITA 2012 Congress
will take place in this country.
Magyar Suzuki Corporation - Esztergom City Visit
This tour combines a visit to the Magyar Suzuki Corporation (see T5 opposite for details) with a visit to the
historic city of Esztergom and includes a light lunch.
This city was the place of birth and coronation for King István, the founder of the Christian State, and the
Royal capital until the 13th century. Its church is the country’s largest, while the Mária Valéria Bridge - which
crosses the river to Slovakia - was reopened just a few years ago after having been destroyed in World War
II. The Basilica is noteworthy for its remarkable altarpiece depicting the Assumption, which is the largest
single-canvas oil-painted altarpiece in the world. After visiting the city, dinner will be at the Renaissance
restaurant in Visegrád, which was the capital of Hungary in the 14-15th centuries.
The prices indicated, include VAT. Book your tour using the registration form or the online registration system via the website. Place will be allocated on a first-come,
Welcome to Budapest
The capital city of Hungary, Budapest, was created out of the
unification of the separate historic towns of Buda, Pest and Óbuda
in 1873. Although the area had been inhabited from early times,
it was from this date that the city’s expansion into a world capital
really began. Budapest is bisected by the River Danube, with the
city as much a natural geographical centre as it is the country’s
transport hub. Covering an area of two hundred square miles
and divided into 23 administrative districts, it is home today to
a population of 2 million people.
Budapest owes everything to the mighty River Danube which
flows north to south through the centre of the city, simultaneously
dividing and linking Pest in the east from the wooded hills of
Buda on the western side. This majestic river has been the focus
of Budapest’s rich and fascinating history and vibrant cultural
heritage throughout the centuries since the Celts first settled
at Gellért Hill in the third and fourth centuries B.C. The city is
rightly known as the Queen of the Danube. It has also been
called the City of Spas, as there are a dozen thermal baths
complexes served by over a hundred natural thermal springs.
Budapest is not an out-of-the way little town waiting to be
discovered, it reveals itself right from the start. It is a city that
has always attached great importance to its appearance, so that
it would appear hospitable and friendly at first sight. In a single
glimpse the visitor can take in the World Heritage panorama with
the Parliament, the imposing Royal Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion,
the impressive Danube Embankment in the heart of the city and
some of the nine bridges spanning the Danube.
On Monday morning, when people go to work, the city shows
its other face. While the tourists set out to explore Buda, Pest is
pulling up its shutters and the pedestrian streets are beginning
34

to bustle with life again. Spending time in Budapest affords a
real journey through time. In some areas, a stroll of merely half
a kilometre is all that is needed to reveal a dazzling architectural
feat of glass-metal-halogen in contrast to the astonishing sight
moments before of a Roman monument dating back over a
thousand years. Whatever your favourite era or architectural
style, you are certain to find a masterpiece of it in Budapest.
Naturally, the history and the beauty of the city is not all. The
people living here create the soul of the city and they have
contributed to its vitality throughout the centuries. Whether sitting
in a quiet café over a pastry or admiring one of the performances
in the Opera House or perhaps relaxing in one of the numerous
ancient thermal baths, it is easy for one to observe how
pleasantly the time passes in Budapest, the heart of Europe.
