3 i8 Radio BroadcastSOMETHING DOING INTHE AIRfollowing stations a thousand or more miles distant:KSD, PWX, WDAF, WDAJ, WFAW,WLAG, WMC, WOAW, WOC, WOS, WSB,SKW (Tuinucu, Cuba), and WKAQ. Consideringour location in the heart of Maineand upon the outer circle of the area -thatincludes the broadcasting stations, our catchis "not too bad."Reflecting upon what has come out of the airto the listeners, one cannot fail to be impressedby the wonderful talent that everywhere inAmerica seems to be the same talent of speechand song, orchestra and band, solo and chorus.Parenthetically, as a preacher, may I say thatthe way in which the broadcasting stationshave so generously lent themselves to theservice of the churches is one of the finest instancesof religious cooperation in a big waythat the Christian world has ever seen.Would that there were time and space to tellsomething about certain speeches and sermonsand music that I have heard. It is said thatDaniel Webster put together his famous replyto Haynes as he fished along the waters of aNew England trout stream. Be this as it may,the radio listener finds not only mental changeand rest in what comes to him out of the air, buthe finds inspiration to better th : ngs and noblereffort. There have been such fine things from allthe stations that it does not seem fair tomention one without mentioning all. But the"bigfish" that I have missed someone elsecatches! There stands out in my memorythe "New York City Symphony" from WEAF,the "Albany Chorus" from WGY, the exquisitemusic from the "Waldorf Astoria" throughWJZ, and the selections by the Little SymphonyOrchestra via KDKA. One night justbefore starting for a church service I heard abeautiful voice at WSB, Atlanta, Georgia, singing "The Heart That Was Broken forMe." It tuned my soul at once for the serviceI was to lead.I shall never forget Miss Bennett's voice andwords as they went out from WOR, Newark,N. J. in the transoceanic broadcasting concertof February 24th. It was midnight. Thetransmission conditions were perfect, and herwonderful voice came in with a clearness thatwas startling. It made one think of the shepherdslong ago, startled, as they were, in theirmidnight vigil by voices out of the air. Ilistened with rapt interest to the greetings shespoke at the end of the concert. "I wish toexpress the great privilege I feel has been minein singing to the people not only of my owncountry but also to the people of France, Italy,Belgium, Switzerland, and the other countriesof Europe.I send my most cordial greetingsto all, and, to the people of Concord, N. H.,my love."Such, I thought, is the spirit of America, the spirit of Christianity, the spirit and goodwillthe world needs. Moreover, broadcastingis glorified as it scatters this cordial good feelingto the ends of the earth.THE RADIO ANGLER'S ROD AND REEL
