Reception de LuxeBy A. R. BOSCOW^ m LIp receiving set described in thisarticle is of a type created to satisfythe ideals of the most lavish experimenterand amateur who wants ameiJL u;,,ihighly sensitive instrument, responsiveto the 100-600 meter wave band, embodyingas simple a system of control as is consistentwith efficient operation. While there are noradical departures from standard radio circuits, the auxiliary circuits possess some novel features. Before the final assembly of this set, practicallyevery known receiving circuit had beentried during the previous twelve years that thewriter had been experimenting with radio. This set, then, expresses what he believes to bethe ultimate in receivers at the present time onthe lower band of wavelengths and for actualperformance and ease of control exceeds theseven-tube super-heterodyne operated at thisstation lastyear.Practically all the stations heard have comein clearly on the loud speaker, which consistsof a Vocarola attachment on a large horn, andmost of the stations were heard with considerablevolume on one step of audio amplificationand quite a number on the detector alone. While the above remarks refer particularly tobroadcast reception, it must not be inferredthat this is the set's only feature, for amateurCW stations have been copied in every district. The set employs six tubes three radiofrequencystages, a detector, and two audiofrequencystages. The tuning circuits arearranged for either loop or antenna reception. When used with an antenna, the tuning elementsconsist of a primary condenser, a variocouplerand secondary condensers. When usedwith a loop, plugging in on the loop jack disconnectsthe primary circuit and variocoupler, leaving the secondary condensers in parallelwith the loop for tuning.
