Черный квадрат Малевича – один из сильнейших персонажейтрагифарса, который называется"Современное искусство". В отличие от ФонтанаДюшана, – мой соотечественник. То есть, наверно,он был наиболее естественным героем для меня. Темболее, что в 86-м, на заре перестройки, он еще былпод запретом, и я его видел только на репродукцияхв западных изданиях. А тут еще - прочитанные когдатодавно теоретические тексты Малевича о супрематизме,совершенно комиксные по их жанру и богословскомуугару. Вот я и додумался, не могу вспомнитьпочему, растянуть квадрат до концептуально бесконечногопрямоугольника, тем более, что по случаюудалось купить рулон черной фотографической бумаги.Был квадрат - станет линия, которая, возможно,когда-то пересекается с чем-то еще.Но в этой истории, которую я пытаюсь восстановить,есть еще одно, и пожалуй, для меня самое важное.Рулон черной бумаги я покрывал рисунками всвоей небольшой комнате, на столе, не имея сценарияс раскадровками. Слева лежал на полу ролик,постепенно сматывавшийся направо. То есть - я неуверен, что к середине работы я точно помнил то,что нарисовал в ее начале. Это - мультяшка, сделаннаяочень быстро и без надежды на прокат по телевизоруили в кинотеатрах. Жизнь и смерть ЧерногоКвадрата была сделана специально для выставкиБиться за искусство, в очень специфических жизненныхи социальных обстоятельствах. Это заведомоэфемерная работа, иначе я бы, наверно, не расстелилее на снегу.Через много лет ее эфемерность усиливается ещетем, что целиком я ее видел один раз - в Битце, наснегу. Но тогда, разумеется, не было ни времени, нижелания рассматривать, что нарисовал. Так чтонарисовано – не помню. Почему прохожие в паркеБитца ее не затоптали – не знаю. And because, in contrast to Duchamp's Fountain,it comes from the same country as I do, it was onlynatural that I chose the Black Square as my hero. Allthe more so since in 1986, at the very outset of “perestroika”,it was still banned and I only knew it fromreproductions in Western publications. In addition, allthe theological fuss in Malevich’s Suprematist writings(that I at one point read) reminded me of comics.So it dawned on me, and I cannot remember why,that I could stretch the square into a conceptuallyendless triangle, especially as I had just by chancemanaged to buy a roll of black photographic paper. Outof the square came a line which will probably sometimeintersect with something else.However in this story which I am trying to remember,there is one more thing which seems most importantto me. I was making drawings on this roll of blackpaper on the table in my small room, without havingany scenario with close-ups. The roll lay to the left onthe floor which I gradually rolled to the right. I am notsure now that by the middle of the work I even rememberedexactly what I had drawn at the beginning. Itwas an animated cartoon done very quickly and withoutany hope to be shown either on TV or in moviehouses. Life and Death of the Black Square was madespecially for the exhibition Struggle for Art and arosefrom very specific personal and social conditions. Itwas an ephemeral work, otherwise I do not think Iwould have spread it on the snow.Many years later its ephemeral effect has beenintensified by the fact that I saw the whole of the workonly once - on the snow in Bitza. But certainly at thattime I had no time nor wish to scrutinize what I haddrawn. So I do not remember what is drawn there.I still do not know why the passers-by did nottrample it underfoot.
