The Career Counselorencourages students to explore career options,develop effective planning skills, create a job plan,identify career goals, and learn the necessary skillsto succeed in the chosen profession. Courses ofaction are recommended, based on the objectivesexpressed by each student. The Career Counselorworks with students to:> Clarify their academic and career interests, and tohelp them choose the right major.> Identify connections between each student’smajor, and career options.> Research potential employers.> Discover job search strategies.> Acknowledge skills and strengths.> Write effective résumés and cover letters.> Prepare for interviews.> Evaluate job offers from potential employers.> Learn to negotiate salaries.> Determine a course of action to meet careerobjectives.The University hosts an annual career fair inwhich local, and international, companies offer <strong>LAU</strong>students full-time, part-time, and internshipopportunities.5. HEAlTH SERViCESPreliminary health care, health education, andcounseling are provided to students, faculty, andstaff. A full-time certified nurse is available, on campus,during week days to respond to student needs.Students are enrolled in a medical insurance plandesigned to alleviate financial difficulties arisingfrom illness or accident.6. EXTRA-CURRiCUlAR ACTiViTiES<strong>LAU</strong> students organize, and participate in, extracurricularactivities, through a variety of campusclubs dedicated to cinema, music, debate, drama,the Red Cross, human rights, social work, and internationalaffairs, to name a few areas of interest. TheGuidance Office coordinates the formation of clubs,and faculty advisors provide assistance towardsachieving club objectives.7. iNTERNATiONAl STUDENT PROgRAMAND NATiONAl CUlTURAl ClUBSWith 73 nationalities represented on its campuses,<strong>LAU</strong> has developed programs to help foreignstudents adapt to the <strong>Lebanese</strong> way of life, as wellas fully integrate into the University community.Through various national cultural clubs, studentsget to network with peers from their countries,while learning to appreciate and celebrate diversity.8. STUDENT HONOR SOCiETY<strong>LAU</strong> students whose cumulative GPA is 3.5 orhigher, upon completion of 24 credits, are honoredat an annual ceremony where they receive awardsand certificates of appreciation. To further recognizeacademic achievement, students with the highestGPAs in each school receive a financial award duringthe ceremony.9. STUDENT PUBliCATiONSThe Guidance Office coordinates, and supervises,the production of publications, such as the Trireme(Yearbook), the Student Handbook, the Biodata (acollection of CVs of graduating students), and theUniversity Desk-Calendar. A bimonthly online publication,the Student Development E-Magazine, waslaunched in the Spring of 2006.10. STUDENT REPRESENTATiON<strong>LAU</strong> introduced Campus Student Councils, aswell as a University Student Council. A constitutionto that effect was approved by the Board of Trusteesin September 2006, and the Bylaws were written bya Committee of students and University officials.The first student elections under the new systemwere held in the academic year 2007–2008.11. ATHlETiCSAs <strong>LAU</strong> grows, the Physical Education andAthletics Program continues to thrive, playing avital role in the academic and extracurricular life ofstudents. The program’s mission is to allow studentathletes to distinguish themselves, through theconstant quest for high achievement, and pursuitof excellence, based on sound educational principles,and practices. ADMISSION TO UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMSADMISSION TO UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMSCandidates for admission may apply to any of thetwo campuses, Beirut or Byblos, by sending anapplication to the campus they choose to join.Applicants may apply to <strong>LAU</strong> as Regular orSpecial, or as Freshman, Sophomore, or Transfer, forthe Fall semester, the Spring Semester, or theSummer terms.Application forms are available at the AdmissionsOffices, and can be mailed to applicants uponrequest. They can also be downloaded from the<strong>LAU</strong> website at: http://www.lau.edu.lb.REQUiREMENTS fOR ADMiSSiONApplicants must submit the following items:a. An application form.b. School record (the school grades of the lastthree years should be sent in a signed, andsealed, envelope, directly to the AdmissionsOffice. The grades of the last year, or semester,should be sent, as soon as they becomeavailable).c. Official scores of the Test of English as a ForeignLanguage (TOEFL), and/or the ScholasticAssessment Test (SAT) exams, if taken.d. Transfer applicants must submit an officialtranscript of grades, and a catalog from all thecolleges, or universities, they have attended.Undeclared transcripts cannot be acceptedafter enrolment.e. A photocopy of the Identity Card or Passport(this should be the same as the nationality tobe used in the registration).f. Two recent, passport-size, color photos.g. A non-refundable fee of $50 (L.L. 75,000).h. This may be determined inone of the following ways:a. A pass on the EEE administered at <strong>LAU</strong>, with aminimum score of 500. This exam may berepeated at intervals of one month.b. A minimum score of 193, computer-based, or525, paper-based, in the TOEFL, or its equivalentin the internet-based TOEFL.c. Applicants with EEE scores between 500 and549, and/or 193 and 230 in TOEFL, computerbased,or 525 and 573, paper-based, or itsequivalent in the internet-based TOEFL, willhave to register for ENG009 Remedial English,a three non-credit course (three hours ofinstruction weekly, with no credits countedafter the completion of the course).d. Applicants with EEE scores in the range of550–599, or TOEFL scores of 233–260, computer-based,or 577–625, paper-based, or itsequivalent in the internet-based TOEFL, will beexempted from ENG009 Remedial English, athree non-credit course.e. Applicants with EEE scores in the range of600–649, or TOEFL scores of 263–297, computer-based,or 627–673, paper-based, or itsequivalent in the internet-based TOEFL, will beexempted from ENG009 Remedial English andENG101 English I.f. Subjects taken in the FE are as follows: Math,Social Sciences, and one of the following subjectmatters: Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.ADMiSSiON TO THE SOPHOMORE ClASSApplicants who might qualify for admission tothe Sophomore class are:a. Holders of the <strong>Lebanese</strong> Baccalaureate: Thereare four types of <strong>Lebanese</strong> Baccalaureate:General Science, Life Science, Economics andSociology, and Literature and Humanities.b. Holders of the Technical Baccalaureate: Theseapplicants may only choose programs in thesame area of specialization as that of theirtechnical degree, or as assigned by the Ministryof Education.c. Holders of the official Secondary SchoolCertificates, equivalent to the <strong>Lebanese</strong>Baccalaureate: French Baccalaureate,International Baccalaureate, German Abitur,Tawjihieh, and others. It should be noted that<strong>Lebanese</strong> applicants must obtain an officialequivalence from the <strong>Lebanese</strong> Ministry ofEducation.d. Applicants who have successfully completedtwo years of the Canadian CollegeD’enseignement General Et Professionnel(CEGEP) Program.e.
