PROGRAMSPROGRAMSlearning OutcomesGraduates in the Bachelor of Science in Biologywill:1. Successfully show the acquisition of sufficientknowledge of the basic content of the biologicalsciences.2. Successfully demonstrate the gaining of sufficientknowledge of the theoretical constructsof the biological sciences.3. Successfully demonstrate the acquisition ofadequate knowledge of the basic content ofcourses in statistics, computing, physics, andchemistry, which are required for an understandingof the biological sciences.4. Demonstrate an adequate experience in laband advanced research techniques.5. Demonstrate significant research experience.6. Show a critical thinking ability in the biologicalsciences, and other supporting fields.7. Demonstrate a problem-solving ability in biologicalscience, and other supporting fields.8. Show an adequate preparation for careers inbiological sciences, or entrance into Graduateor Professional study.9. Successfully demonstrate effective written andoral communication of biological concepts.10. Participate in, and be evaluated on, communityservice activities, drawn from adequate andvaried opportunities, to use discipline-relatedinformation in the service to the campus, localcommunity, and/or regional surroundings. This Program is tailored not only to studentsplanning to enter the M.S. or Ph.D. Programs, butalso for Pre-Pharmacy, and Pre-Medical, students. Italso prepares students for an eventual career inbiology-related fields (e.g. pharmaceuticals, cosmeticsor food processing industries, medical laboratories,etc.).Laboratory courses are offered in a modern, wellequipped, multidisciplinary teaching laboratory.Several research facilities are available to studentswith independent research interests, in addition tothose in the department of biology. Professors arealways available to work closely with the studentsduring their independent research and field studies. Also, the labs offer students, and faculty, a convenientsite for intensive instruction, or access toweb-based, and other software, materials. The department has prepared a three-year studyplan. Students are advised to observe the three-yearplan carefully, to avoid any undue delay in graduation.Based on the proposed plan, students shouldbe able to graduate in three years, including twoSummer modules, and to complete all the requirements, including 38 credits in Biology andBiochemistry.Biology (35 credits)BIO201 General Biology I 4BIO202 General Biology II 4BIO311 Microbiology 3BIO312 Microbiology Lab 1BIO321 Genetics 3BIO322 Genetics Lab 1BIO331 Ecology 4BIO343 Anatomy and Physiology 3BIO344 Anatomy and Physiology Lab 1BIO345 Cell and Molecular Biology 4BIO499 Senior Study 3BCH301 Introduction to Biochemistry 4Biology Electives (6 credits)Choose two Biology Elective coursesBIO401 Developmental Biology 3BIO341 Plant Physiology 3BIO 410 Biotechnology 3BIO 420 Virology and Immunology 3Chemistry (16 credits)CHM201 Chemical Principles 3CHM202 Analytical Chemistry 3CHM204 Quantitative Analysis 2CHM311 Organic Chemistry I 3CHM313 Organic Chemistry I Lab 1CHM312 Organic Chemistry II 3CHM314 Organic Chemistry II Lab 1Mathematics and Computer Science (7 credits)MTH200 Mathematics for Life Sciences 3STA205 Biostatistics 3CSC201 Computer Literacy 1Physics (8 credits)PHY301 Classical Physics for Life Sciences 3PHY302 Classical Physics for Life Sciences Lab 1PHY305 Modern Physics for Life Sciences 3PHY306 Modern Physics for Life Sciences Lab 14BACHElOR Of SCiENCE (B.S.)iN CHEMiSTRYThe Chemistry Program at LAU provides a highquality education, leading to a Bachelor of Sciencein Chemistry, covering the main chemistry disciplines,(analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical)as well as satisfying the basic chemical informationneeded in the other scientific programs, within theframework of a liberal arts program. Chemistry isalso the “Central Discipline” needed in science orientedprograms: science education, engineering, pharmacy, biology and pre-medicine. The ChemistryProgram is designed to prepare students for careersin chemical industry, medical and scientific laboratories, and the education sectors. In addition, it willallow B.S. holders to pursue their Graduate study inany chemistry discipline, chemical engineering, medicine or other health professions, as well asenvironmental science.MissionThe Mission of the Bachelor of Science inChemistry Program is to provide students with arigorous education in the fundamental areas ofchemistry. The Program offers theoretical, and practical, knowledge in chemistry, within the context ofa liberal arts program, which will graduate wellroundedindividuals who are prepared for careers inChemistry, and/or Graduate studies, and who areconscious of their role as responsible citizens.Educational ObjectivesThe purpose of the Bachelor of Science inChemistry is to:1. Provide students with a sound education inthe fundamental concepts, and the practice ofchemistry.2. Offer a variety of courses (theoretical andexperimental) to cover the fundamental areasof chemistry (analytical, organic, inorganic andphysical).3. Provide the necessary service courses for otherdepartments that require chemistry, as anintegral part of their curriculum.4. Provide students with the ability to work effectively, and safely, in a laboratory environment.5. Provide students with sound managementknowledge of the safe handling of chemicals, and hazardous material.6. Provide students access to advance the moderninstrumental, and analytical, techniquesand applications.7. Provide basic research methodology, dataanalysis, and interpretation.8. Provide students with the ability to use computertechnology for chemistry applications.9. Provide students with the ability to work independently,as well as in groups.10. Provide students with “on-site-application” oftheir knowledge, through a local internship(industry, hospitals and technical labs).11. Prepare students for the job markets (locallyand abroad) in: education, industry, hospitals, and governmental and environmentalsectors.12. Prepare students for postgraduate study inchemistry, chemical engineering, and medicine,as well as related sciences.ACADEMIC CATALOG [ 2008-2009 ] SCHOOl Of ARTS & SCiENCESA&S83Lebanese American University | page 82
