An ethnic Meitei terroristgroup known as Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, whichlaunched an ‘anti-corruption’ campaign in 2001 to‘clean up’ the education system in the north-easternstate of Manipur, claimed responsibility for theattack. 776Two student trade unionists, including the speaker ofthe Sumi Students’ Union and the former presidentand advisor to Kiphire Sumi Students’ Union, wereshot and injured by National Socialist Council ofNagaland-Khaplang militia in Dimapur on 2 May2009. 777Attacks on education in 2013There were isolated reports of attacks on schools bysuspected Maoist fighters 778 and of recruitment ofschoolchildren to their ranks, 779 although it was notclear whether this happened on school premises.Minority and marginalized communities continued tosuffer violence in education settings. Adult literacy was93 per cent (2009). 786Attacks on schoolsAt least a dozen attacks on schools attended byminority Muslim sects – Ahmadiya, Shia and Sufi –and on Christian schools were reported by media andhuman rights sources in 2009-2012.In 2011, during a mob attack on Ahmadiya followers inCisalada, militants burned down homes andschools. 787On 15 February 2011, approximately 200 militantsattacked an elite Shia boarding school for kindergartento high school students in Bangil, East Java,throwing stones, smashing windows and destroying aguard post. The attackers left after the police firedwarning shots, but the incident left nine studentsinjured. 788 There were four more attacks on the schoolin 2010 and 2011. In one incident in 2010, bullets hitthe windows of a female dormitory. In two incidents inFebruary 2011, the female dormitory was stoned,damaging the ceiling. 789On 29 December 2011, Sunni militants attacked theShia community in Nangkernang hamlet, reportedlyburning a religious school (madrassa) in addition toseveral houses. 790Five Catholic schools were attacked by young Muslimextremists.
