THE FUTURE ISELECTRIC WITHOPPORTUNITYElectricity is expectedto remain the fastestgrowingform ofend-use energy worldwidethrough 2030,according to the U.S.Energy InformationAdministration. ForHubbell, that forecastoffers powerfulopportunities for managing, moving, conserving and using electricalenergy – all in ways that arecompatible with sustainableenvironmental practices.L I G H T I N GIn 2008, Hubbell Lighting Inc. (HLI)launched 50 new products in commercial andindustrial markets and another 100 in theresidential market. But, the numbers that really tellthe story are in energy efficiency. “Green”construction is expected to grow from$12 billion in 2008 to $60billion by 2010. Lightingrepresents a significant pieceof that growth as 80 percent ofexisting commercial buildings have lighting systemsthat are more than 20 years old. HLI is wellpositioned in the market for efficient lightingproducts, starting with the broadest line of lightemittingdiode (LED) fixtures in its industry. HLIis also a leader in the compact fluorescent lighting(CFL) market, which is benefiting from U.S.Department of Energy backing and utilityprograms offering subsidies for consumers whoreplace incandescent sources with CFLs. As lightingaccounts for 30 to 50 percent of the electricity usedin most buildings – residential, commercial andindustrial – the savings potential is considerable.HLI’s GreenWise program, a sustainabilityinitiative to reduce energy consumption, waste, carbon footprints, materials usage and lightpollution, was also launched in 2008. GreenWise is initially targeting five market segments:commercial offices, education, healthcare,manufacturing/warehousing and government.Sustainable lighting solutions can help buildingowners earn credits toward LEED ® certificationfrom the U.S. Green Building Council.W I R I N GHubbell Building Automation (HBA) postedstrong revenue gains in 2008, driven by the risingcost of energy and federal and state regulationsrequiring greater energy efficiency. The opportunityis large as about three-quarters of existing buildingsare without lighting controls. HBA is bestknown for controls that easilyintegrate building automationsystems. The line includesnetworked lighting controls, occupancysensors, daylight controls and high bay controlstypically used in facilities such as warehouses.Going forward, new opportunities are opening upin exterior lighting controls and innovativeapproaches that place controls within the lightingfixture. Hubbell is well positioned to serve thesemarkets.15
