33HealthProvinces of Bas-Congo and Bandundu : Project Launched for prevention and management ofmalnutrition among children under five years in eight health zones supported by <strong>Caritas</strong> CongoThe launch of Project preventionand management of malnutritionamong children under five yearsin eight health zones supportedby <strong>Caritas</strong> Congo has occurredrecently. In these eight healthzones (HZ) in the provinces ofBas-Congo and Bandundu theproject target is 6,000 children,reports caritasdev.cdThe health zones (HZ) retainedby the Project for the preventionand management of malnutritionamong children under five yearsin eight health zones supportedby <strong>Caritas</strong> Congo Kenge, Bulungu,Gungu Idiofa and for theProvince of Bandundu andKisantu Nselo, Kimvula Ngidingaand for the province of Bas-Congo, the two provinces arelocated in the south-west of theDemocratic Republic of Congo(DRC). This project has receivedfunding from Japan given<strong>to</strong> Unicef. Dr. Amédée YAMBIMufu, Programme Officer(Nutrition) <strong>Caritas</strong> Congo, oversawthe launch of the new projectKenge and Idiofa, the rate ofchild malnutrition by 12% and11%. The launch, which <strong>to</strong>okplace July 24, 2012, consisted oftraining providers and communityliaisons or Reco. Were usedfor training providers <strong>to</strong> Kenge20 and 20 and 50 Idiofa Reco forboth ZS. It was among these servicemembers of the team part ofhealth zones, executives BDOM(Diocesan Office of MedicalWorks), nurses owners, attendants... They were trained in thenew approach or IYCF InfantFeeding and Young Child, theoverall power of the child 0-2years.- 0-2 years age group w<strong>here</strong> malnutritionsets in childrenDuring this training, trainers andDr. Amédée YAMBI frame memberPRONANUT national providershave <strong>to</strong> understand the importanceand Reco <strong>to</strong> grant thepower of the child 0-2 years. Infact, they said, it is at this agethat malnutrition sets in children.Both trainers also explained<strong>to</strong> the trainees how <strong>to</strong>feed the child, give any food fordifferent age groups (0 <strong>to</strong> 6months 6 <strong>to</strong> 12 months 12 <strong>to</strong> 24months). The trainers stressedthe importance of breastfeedingin these age groups. They alsoinsisted that breast milk containsthe nutrients necessary for thegrowth of the child and it is acomplete food containing water,vitamins, proteins, fat and especiallyantibodies. They repeatedthat exclusive breastfeeding is 0-6 months and the child does notneed other foods than breastmilk which brings 100% of energyneeded for growth.- New approach or IYCF InfantFeeding and Young ChildThese providers come and Recotraining had scattered ideas inthis area and they were veryhappy with the approach IYCFat their disposal. During thetraining, participants were detectedlocal foods that have nutritionalvalue, so that the selectedvillages can popularize insupport groups will be in thefield of the fight against malnutrition.More than 20 nutritiousfoods have been identified in allcases for Kenge and Idiofa.
