Today, emphasis is on the restoration of the full continuum ofthis landscape, from Mitchell and Grant’s 1867 design for a formal, passive Victorian park, through RalphGriswold’s early modern streamlining of path patterns and emphasis on active sport, through Simonds andSimonds’ high modern re-affirmation of West Common as a pastoral landscape. The park’s extant resourcesestablish associations with all these eras of urban park design and use.12

In 1966, as part of an urban renewal plan for the entire NorthSide neighborhood in which it is situated, West Common in Allegheny Commons was redesigned by the modernlandscape architect John Ormsbee Simonds, and some of Simonds’ plans were implemented in West Common in 1967.13
