Today, emphasis is on the restoration <strong>of</strong> the full continuum <strong>of</strong>this landscape, from Mitchell and Grant’s 1867 design for a formal, passive Victorian park, through RalphGriswold’s early modern streamlining <strong>of</strong> path patterns and emphasis on active sport, through Simonds andSimonds’ high modern re-affirmation <strong>of</strong> West Common as a pastoral landscape. The park’s extant resourcesestablish associations with all these eras <strong>of</strong> urban park design and use.12
