INTRODUCTIONThe ArgoPore family of products is based on ahighly-crosslinked, rigid macroporous polystyreneframework. ArgoPore resin has a high internalsurface area with reaction sites at the surface ofthe internal pore structure. These reaction sitesare accessible without the need for swelling bysolvent as with lightly crosslinked poly(styreneco-divinylbenzene)resins, referred to as gel-typeresins. Therefore,ArgoPore can be used with anysolvent, including water.The unique structure of ArgoPore facilitates the- direct transfer of reaction conditions from knownsolution phase methods to solid phase. Inaddition,ArgoPore is ideally suited for automationwith its unique handling properties: rapidwashing and drying and free-flowing beads whichdo not stick to glass reaction vessels.With ArgoPore, byproducts and impurities may beremoved in fewer washes - with shorter washtimes and using virtually any solvent, evenaqueous acids and bases.BENEFITS OF ARGOPORE AS A SUPPORTFOR SOLID PHASE ORGANIC SYNTHESISThe internal structure of ArgoPore offers numerousadvantages for solid phase organic synthesisincluding:Rapid diffusional access of reagents to thereaction sitesImproved reaction rates at low temperaturesAccess to polymer-supported intermediates thatare soluble only under reaction conditionswhich cause collapse of swollen gel-type resinsExcellent resistance to cracking due to rapidswelling (osmotic shock)Rapid solvent removal in vacuo betweensynthesis stepsLow and predictable swelling in all solvents; idealfor small volume reaction vessels and 96-wellplate applications-ArgoPore resins are available as aminomethyl,hydroxymethyl and chloromethyl base resins.Loading values for these base resins range from0.61.1 mmole per gram. In addition, high loadand low load aminomethyl resins are availablewith capacities of 1.1-1.6 and 0.2-0.6 mmole pergram respectively.
