1% crosslinked poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)resin, commonly referred to as simply polystyrene,is a widely used solid support for organicsynthesis. The many references for polystyrene inthe literature provide a rich source of informationfor chemists planning solid phasechemistry. Some aspects of polystyrene resinthat contribute to its wide use are:stabilityhigh loading capacitygood swelling characteristicscompatibility with a variety of non-proticsolventslow costIn order to provide a full line of resins for solidphase organic synthesis,Argonaut Technologiesoffers three resin types: polystyrene, ~rgoPore@and ~rgo~el@ - each with distinctive characteristics. For a wide range of reactions, standardpolystyrene resins provide a cost-effectiveoption. But due to the hydrophobicity ofpolystyrene divinylbenzene, aqueous or otherprotic solvents do not result in the resinswelling necessary to enable reagents to reachthe reaction sites inside the polymer bead. Forchemistry in protic solvents,ArgoPore resin, based on a highly-crosslinked macroporouspolystyrene framework, or ArgoGel resin, basedon a polyethylene glycol (PEG) graftedpolystyrene, are good alternatives.Linkers provide attachment sites for differentfunctional groups and are subject to differentcleavage conditions. It is important to have a varietyof linkers available in order to allow for flexibility inthe selection of reaction conditions and reagents.Argonaut's polystyrene-based resins offer high purityand high loading capacities. Total extractables aretypically less than 0.2%. Chloromethyl andaminomethyl base resins are available with a loadingrange of 1.2-1.7 mmol/g. Linker products includeKink,Wang, arylsulfonamide, 2-methoxy-4-alkoxybenzaldehyde and butyl diethylsilane (DES).Argonaut's resin products based on 1% crosslinked~>oly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) are denoted by PS inthe product name.Argonaut's novel PS-DES resin is similar to aTES (triethylsilyl)group in terms of chemical stability, and isgenerally useful as a linker for solid phase synthesis, for the attachment of alcohols, carbonyls, acetylenesand aromatics. In addition to the standard quantities listed in thisdocument, Argonaut's polystyrene resins are alsoavailable in larger bulk quantities and pre-weighed inArgo~aps.'"These capsules are a time-saving, convenientway to deliver fixed units of resins to a reactionvessel.ArgoCaps protect resins from moisturebut are constructed of a polymer which is easily dissolvedwith dichloromethane.#3 size ArgoCaps each contain approximately 150mg of polystyrene resin.#5 size ArgoCaps each contain approximately 65mg of polystyrene resin.Custom resin filling of ArgoCaps is available; pleasecontact Argonaut for more information.LArtisan Technology Group - Quality Instrumentation ...
