The Committee notes with concern the high rate of maternal mortalitydue to illegal abortions, particularly in the northern regions wherewomen have insufficient access to health care facilities. TheCommittee is also concerned about the persistence of forced sterilization.28. The Committee is concerned that some articles of the Penal Code discriminateagainst women. In particular, it is concerned that article 215of the Code requires the victim of a minor sexual assault to be an"honest woman" in order to prosecute the offence.29. The Committee notes with concern that sexual and domestic violenceare widespread and not being sufficiently denounced in Brazil.30. The Committee is deeply concerned about the high incidence of traffickingin women for the purpose of sexual exploitation.31. The Committee notes with concern the high concentration of land inthe hands of a minority, and its negative effects on the equitable distributionof wealth.32. In spite of the efforts taken by the State party to reduce poverty, theCommittee is concerned about the persistence of the poverty in theState party, especially in the North-East and in rural areas, andamong the Afro-Brazilians and the disadvantaged and marginalizedgroups.33. The Committee notes with concern that, according to the State party'sreport, at least 42 per cent of families currently live in inadequatehousing facilities without adequate water supply, waste disposal andtrash collection. It also notes that 50% of the population of majorurban areas live in informal urban communities (illegal settlementsand homes, as stated in paragraph 512 of the State party's report).34. The Committee notes with concern that the State party has not facilitatedthe access to, and adequate provision of, housing credit and subsidiesto low-income families, especially the disadvantaged andmarginalized groups.35. The Committee is deeply concerned that State party does not providesufficient protection for indigenous peoples, who continue to be110
