Capoeira Footfighting from Brazil to South AfricaA martial art disguised as dance, capoeira is a form of resistance andcommunication invented over 400 years ago by Brazilian slaves. Nowa Brazilian national sport, capoeira is promoted in the country’s lowincomeneighbourhoods by the Grupo Abolicao through ProjectoCrianzas do Abaete and in South Africa through the Keiskamma Trust. These capoeira schools bring the art form’s rich lexicon of movement, etiquette, music, song, history and spirituality to marginalised com mu -nities. Young people train daily, compete in batizado grading ceremoniesand perform in neighbouring villages. The Prince Claus Fund has enabledleading students from South Africa to participate in activities in Brazil, linking young South Africans with their Brazilian counterparts. Theymake the diaspora heritage of capoeira their own and return home withknowledge and skills they can transmit to others. The role of the bodyand the intercultural vocabulary of capoeira make it of special interestto the Fund.CapoeiraFootfightingfrom Brazil toSouth Africa113Culture and the Human Body
