She hasdetermined that each of theeleven drivers had lost his fitnessand revoked their large goodsvehicle driver licences. Shedisqualified them for periodsranging from 18 months to3 years and in one case anindefinite disqualification.Miss Aitken stated that shewas lenient due the drivers cooperating with VOSA and theCumbrian police throughoutthe investigation. Over theyears a significant number ofGB drivers have been dealtwith for a wide range ofoffences ranging from speedingthough to the most serious.Anyone caught using a mobilephone points can expect aninvitation to a drivers conducthearing and most end up witha short suspension. A secondoffence will see a longersuspension and so on. Anotherexample was a driver convictedof smuggling drugs. After his jailsentence he lost his entitlementto drive trucks for a few years!I would imagine that in theBoyle drivers’ case, theiremployment prospects havediminished greatly and theymay struggle to get a decentjob when their suspensions areover. The insurance premiumsfor companies consideringemploying them will probablybe a lot higher as well and mayinfluence prospective employers.Is it worth breaking the lawfor a few extra pounds a weekwhen there is a strong possibilitythat when caught earningswill be drastically reduced?Perhaps now the message willstart to get through that offencessuch as these will not betolerated. By all accounts thereare many drivers in NorthernIreland who seriously breakdrivers’ hours rules and interferewith the tachographs. So I wouldhope that at some stage soon,the powers that be will considerintroducing driver conducthearings over here. It will be animportant deterrent that willhelp reduce unfair competitionand make the roads safer.The vast majority of hauliersfrom GB welcome it and allin Northern Ireland who tryto do the right thing shouldit welcome it too as well asapplauding Miss Aitken’s andthe other Traffic Commissioners’actions to ensure a safer andfairer road freight industry!TRU RoadshowsIt was pleasing to see so manyattend the road shows organisedby the Transport Regulation Unitlast month. By all accounts morethan 2,000 attended and nowhave a better understandingof what is expected over thecoming months and years.What is a really concerning isthat quite a number do nothave a “hire or reward” licenceand should have had one along time ago. I would not besurprised if the number is in thehigh hundreds! Somehow theyhave been under the radar andnow the opportunity to get onebefore the changes take effectis diminishing rapidly. There aresome who I hope do manageto get themselves sorted butthere are still quite a numberwho seem not to care and willcontinue to operate illegallyand no doubt plead ignorancewhen they get caught. Untilthat day comes they are takingwork that should be done bylegal licensed hauliers and inmany instances with the fullknowledge of their customers.Fuel Duty RegulatorThe SNP has launched a petitionsupporting the introductionof a Fuel Duty Regulator. Itcoincides with figures publishedby the European Commissionshowing the proportion oftax levied on fuel by the UKTreasury is the highest amongstall EU members at 57.4% forunleaded and 55.8% for diesel.Tax expressed as a percentageof the pre-tax price is also thehighest in the EU: 134.9% forunleaded and 126.3% for diesel.Over the years we havesupported the SNP’s proposalsas they should bring stability toprices. It will help much morethan the Conservative “fair fuelstabiliser”! It seems that it onlylimits increases in duty to therate of inflation if the oil pricestays above £45 ($75 dollarsequivalent) and the escalatorreturns if it drops below for a setperiod. It doesn’t sound fair orstable to me. A couple of yearsago there was some support forthe SNP from Northern IrelandMP’s. It is needed more thanever now!!
