Regional Plan of Conservation and Development, 2006-2015TrendsNorwalk Community CollegeThe Region is not insulated from downturns in thenational and global economies, although it hasweathered these events better than many otherregions. While the Region’s manufacturing sector hasdeclined, its lucrative corporate and financial sectorshave expanded, bringing with it rising income levelsand the concomitant strengthening of the Region’sretail sector.However, as stated previously, the Region’sstature as one of the country’s premier suburbancorporate centers is potentially vulnerable due to theRegion’s extremely high land and rent costs; its agingtransportation infrastructure and the resulting trafficcongestion that currently chokes the regionaltransportation network, and which is projected to getworse; and the need to pay workers salaries that arevery high relative to those paid in other parts of thestate and the nation. Furthermore, currentlyunforeseen state and federal tax policies and otherregulations could also negatively impact the Region’sappeal as a place to do business.University of New Haven and Sacred Heart University.Many residents also avail themselves of educationalofferings in New York and other parts of Connecticut.New York CityAs mentioned numerous times in this Plan, theRegion’s proximity to New York City is a great benefitto its residents. One of the most tangible of thesebenefits is the availability of the City’s unparalleledcultural attractions, including Broadway, museums,galleries, professional sports, historical sites, ethnicneighborhoods and restaurants. Residents of theRegion are frequent visitors to New York’s attractions.17
