<strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Development</strong>, <strong>2006</strong>-<strong>2015</strong>RecommendationsRecommendations for improving local <strong>and</strong> regionalemergency preparedness have emerged as a naturalresult <strong>of</strong> information exchange, planning <strong>and</strong>coordinating activities. Those recommendations are asfollows:❑ Continue to perform planning coordination <strong>and</strong>information exchange activities for the benefit <strong>of</strong>member municipalities.❑ Encourage municipalities to implementrecommendations contained in the Pre-DisasterMitigation <strong>Plan</strong>, including those related to thepreservation <strong>of</strong> natural storm protectors such ascoastal barriers <strong>and</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong>s, tree <strong>and</strong> drainagemaintenance programs, the increased use ifgeographic information systems to further identifythe potential impacts <strong>of</strong> severe weather eventsbefore they occur, <strong>and</strong> the review <strong>of</strong> repetitiveproperty loss data <strong>and</strong> revision <strong>of</strong> local zoning <strong>and</strong>building codes, as needed, to help prevent futureloss or damage to property.❑ Encourage municipalities to aggressively pursuefunding to protect <strong>and</strong> strengthen natural <strong>and</strong>artificial systems that <strong>of</strong>fer protection against loss<strong>and</strong> damage caused by weather events such asflooding <strong>and</strong> severe winds.❑ Encourage member municipalities to reach outto a wide range <strong>of</strong> local, regional <strong>and</strong> statewideorganizations to identify resources that may beavailable to aid emergency response <strong>and</strong>recovery efforts.❑ Encourage member municipalities to strengthenexisting mutual aid agreements to support aregional response system.❑ Support member municipalities in their efforts toimprove <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong> existing communicationssystems to achieve greater interoperability.❑ Encourage municipalities to implement emergencytelephone notification systems <strong>and</strong> enhancedcommunity alert systems to ensure that personsliving <strong>and</strong> working in the Region are promptlynotified <strong>of</strong> hazardous conditions <strong>and</strong> events thatmay pose a threat to life <strong>and</strong> property.47
