Regional Plan of Conservation and Development, 2006-2015RecommendationsRecommendations for improving local and regionalemergency preparedness have emerged as a naturalresult of information exchange, planning andcoordinating activities. Those recommendations are asfollows:❑ Continue to perform planning coordination andinformation exchange activities for the benefit ofmember municipalities.❑ Encourage municipalities to implementrecommendations contained in the Pre-DisasterMitigation Plan, including those related to thepreservation of natural storm protectors such ascoastal barriers and wetlands, tree and drainagemaintenance programs, the increased use ifgeographic information systems to further identifythe potential impacts of severe weather eventsbefore they occur, and the review of repetitiveproperty loss data and revision of local zoning andbuilding codes, as needed, to help prevent futureloss or damage to property.❑ Encourage municipalities to aggressively pursuefunding to protect and strengthen natural andartificial systems that offer protection against lossand damage caused by weather events such asflooding and severe winds.❑ Encourage member municipalities to reach outto a wide range of local, regional and statewideorganizations to identify resources that may beavailable to aid emergency response andrecovery efforts.❑ Encourage member municipalities to strengthenexisting mutual aid agreements to support aregional response system.❑ Support member municipalities in their efforts toimprove and expand existing communicationssystems to achieve greater interoperability.❑ Encourage municipalities to implement emergencytelephone notification systems and enhancedcommunity alert systems to ensure that personsliving and working in the Region are promptlynotified of hazardous conditions and events thatmay pose a threat to life and property.47
