73 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION3.1 Landscape PropertiesThe landscape of Olkiluoto Island has been under rapid changes during the time ofPosiva's environmental monitoring programme. Construction of the third nuclear powerplant on Olkiluoto (OL3) started in 2003. In recent great changes have occurred, part ofwhich are related to power production and part to nuclear waste disposal (Table 2).Table 2. They form the basis for mappingthe baseline situation and serve as a benchmark for the monitoring of changes. In addition,visible band aerial imagery has been obtained for planning the construction ofONKALO. Some low oblique aerial images have also been taken, most recently onJune 7, 2006 (Fig. 2). No satellite images have so far been acquired.Table 3.
