113.2 Input to Biosphere Modelling3.2.1 RadionuclidesRadioactivity in the environment is monitored by the nuclear power plant operated byTVO. Samples from air, terrestrial environment, terrestrial foodstuffs and marine environmentare relevant for Posiva as well. The results are collected in a database. TVO'ssampling activities have focused on the marine ecosystem. Before the operation of theencapsulation plant and the repository starts, the terrestrial baseline must also be morecomprehensively studied regarding radionuclides.The major anthropogenic sources of radionuclides in the area originate from the Chernobylfallout in April 1986 and from authorized effluents and air emissions from thenuclear power plant. The most common nuclides clearly originating from the powerplant include, for example, Mn-54, Co-60 and Ag-110m (not exclusively). Naturallyabundant nuclides, such as Be-7 and K-40 are found in every sample if determined.Their concentrations represent natural variations in the ecosystem and also reflect thequality of the measurement. In addition, the behaviour of these elements and nuclides isrelatively well known enabling, for example, model adjustments against the measurements.The results of radionuclide analyses in 2005 are shown in Appendix C. Some examplesof radionuclides in terrestrial environment are given in Fig. 5. Radionuclides in soil,mushrooms and berries are being measured at four-year intervals, the latest results beingfrom 2005 (reported in Haapanen 2006).
