Thistest determines the volume change a mortar undergoes when it sets and hardens underconfinement. As shown in Figure 6 on the following page, the cylindrical mold confined themortar on the bottom and around the circumference, leaving only the top exposed. Toperform the test, the mold was placed into the micrometer bridge apparatus and secured. Thetop <strong>of</strong> the micrometer bridge had four holes where the depth gauge was inserted tomeasure the distance to the concrete surface, or to the glass plate for the initial readings.The thickness <strong>of</strong> the glass plate was added onto the initial readings and the initial averagedepth measurement was calculated (V i ). The average depth readings were calculated forthe 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day ages (V 1day , V 3day , V 7day ).14
