- 5.1.6 Compressive Strength -A set of two 8-inch high, 4-inch diameter cylinders were tested for compressive strengthat 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days in accordance with ASTMC 39. As shown in Figure 8 below, a compressive axial load was applied to the concretecylinder at a constant rate until failure occurred. The compressive strength of the cylinderwas determined by measuring the maximum load it was able to resist before failure anddividing that by the cross-sectional area of the cylinder.Figure 8. Compressive Strength TestingThe compressive strength testing machine is controlled by a computer that monitors the rate at whichthe load is applied to the concrete cylinder and the load at which the concrete cylinder reaches failure(left). A new cylinder is placed into the testing machine (center). The cylinder reaches failure after itcould no longer withstand the increasing compressive load (right).The compressive strengths of each set of cylinders were averaged and the results areshown in Table 5 on the following page. The compressive strengths have also beengraphed to show the rate at which strength is gained in each patch material; the earlyresults (at 4, 6, 8, and 24 hours) are shown in Figure 9 on page 20, and all of the resultsare shown in Figure 10 on page 21. As with any concrete, compressive strength increaseswith maturity during the ongoing process of hydration. Variations in the strength ofconcrete of the same age can occur and are normal, due to inadvertent variations in thecasting of the cylinders (i.e. varying levels of consolidation). Thus, some of the patchmaterials showed a drop in compressive strength between 3 and 7 days or between 7 and28 days.18
